Foxborough Warrior Girl Lacrosse Lose to Canton

Warriors couldn't stop the Bulldogs late in the game and lost 19-14.

Going into their game against Canton, Foxboro looked to improve on their tie against Sharon. Once again they played a close game but couldn’t get the result they wanted. Despite having the lead several times in the game, the Warriors couldn’t stop the Bulldogs late in the game and lost 19-14.

The Warriors started strong with a goal from Katie Notarangelo at 1:36. Canton would come right back a minute later with goals from Meghan Hannon and Jen Martin. Showing shades of the game against Sharon, Foxboro responded by taking a 5-3 lead with 10:49 left in the first half. Meghan Hannon tied it up for Canton with two goal. Both teams would go back and forth throughout the entire half and would go into the break tied at 7.

Both teams continued to go back and forth early in the second half. Canton began to pull away getting a 15-12 lead with 7:35 to go. Despite getting to within 1, Canton continued improve as the half went on.

“We’ve been playing a lot on turf so the problem is that the ball bounces a lot quicker,” said Canton coach Chris Murtag. “It took a little time to get to use to picking up ground balls and getting balls of the ground. So playing in a better field that time was a distraction to us.”

Foxboro attempted to come back but could not with limited possessions and the clock working against them. Canton would add on 4 more goals for good measure to get a 5 goal win over the Warriors.

“They stated moving really well. So once they started getting movement they started to open up our shooting and we capitalized on that,” said Murtag.

Despite playing strong for most of the game, Foxboro was unable to produce goals when they needed them.

“Think the girls kinda just gave up. We came out strong then they(Canton) got a 2 goal lead and kinda gave up after that,” said Warriors coach Jess Cercone.

Its been a tough couple of games for the Warriors. After tying Sharon on Wednesday, the Warriors were looking for win this afternoon. Despite the effort, Coach Cercone showed frustration in being unable to get a win after a tie.

“Its so much more frustrating. We had the game the whole time. We had control of the game. We were getting the possessions and it just didn’t go our favor” said Cercone.

With the win, Canton improves to 2-0 and Foxboro goes to 0-1-1. Next for the Warriors is a match at Bellingham on Monday afternoon. Leading up to the game, Coach Cerone will be sure to work on late game management with her team.

“That’s something that we struggled with is showing up for both halves,” said Cerone. “Playing good solid lacrosse for both halves.”
