Butterfly Landing Family Child Care is Combining Comforts of Home and Education

A fresh new approach to early childhood education.

Butterfly Landing Family Child Care in Foxborough is providing early childhood education in the comforts of home.

Laura Feeney, who operates Butterfly Landing Family Child Care out of her home, believes that "by caring for and teaching children in a home setting, provides extra one-on-one attention to each child."

"I am not just a babysitter. I am trying to create a program and curriculum around the child's needs," said Feeney in a one-on-one interview with Patch.

Feeney has worked in the Early Childhood field for over 13 years since earning a degree in Psychology and a Minor in Fine Arts from Regis College. She is now bringing her years of experience and love of teaching into her own home through Butterfly Landing Family Child Care.

"I felt there was a need for a fresh approach to early education. I believe in providing early education in the comforts of home, focusing on learning experiences that are guided through literature, music and folk tales," noted Feeney. "I really believe in using literature and circle time to present learning opportunities, so children can learn while they are playing."

In the play room and activity area in her home, various pieces of art are hung on the walls, where Feeney welcomes children to show off their art work completed during activity time.

"Displaying art work is important to me," she said. "I feel it creates a variety of self."

The activity and play room has access to a large deck that leads out into a fenced in play yard. In the home, parents and caregivers are greeted by a "family corner," that includes a board for messages, important postings, and a large calendar with highlights to special days during the month.

A newsletter, reviewing the various activities that take place during the day, is provided for parents and caregivers.

"Through the newsletter for the parents, it continues the learning and activities that their children experience here, so they can be involved," said Feeney.

Educational and fun activities that children will participate in at Butterfly Landing include seasonal celebrations, bringing books to life through art, touring the world, and circle time.

"Mostly, I am guided by their needs and interests," said Feeney. "If one week they are not into dinosaurs, I can switch and come up with something else."

The daily schedule is maintained to nurture children’s individual needs and interests. The daily schedule will include a balance of activity and quiet time. Free play, project and circle time are essential components of the daily routine.

"A sense of stability and consistency is important for children," noted Feeney.

Butterfly Landing Family Child Care operates Monday-Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm. Extended hour options may be available to accommodate individual family needs.

Butterfly Landing Family Child Care is holding two open houses this week for parents and caregivers who want to tour the space or who may have questions. The open house will be held on Wednesday Sept. 7th from 1pm-5pm and Thursday Sept. 8th, 10am-1pm and 3pm-7pm.
