Local Pastors Send Gambling Opposition Letter to Foxborough Selectmen

Area religious leaders from Foxborough, Walpole and Norfolk sent Foxborough selectmen a letter in December in opposition to the proposed resort casino across from Gillette Stadium, the Sun Chronicle reports. In the letter, clergy members also say that they support the board's September vote to not support gambling anywhere in the town of Foxborough.

"We are joined together to affirm the decision made in September by your unanimous vote to oppose gambling in Foxboro. We believe it was the wise and correct decision and extend our support," the letter states.

The clergy note their concern over casino gambling stems from "whatever form the proposal may entail, is harmful to the communities where we minister."

The letter further cites a study completed by the Community Research Partners of Columbus, Ohio, reporting that "1.5% of the population will become addicted if they gamble, in one county cited alone there were 22,000 problem gamblers."
