Foxborough Recognizes Community Volunteers

Community members were recognized by selectmen for their volunteer service to the town.

The Board of selectmen took time Tuesday night to recognize community members who have taken the time to benefit the community through volunteer work.

Peter Solbo, highway supervisor, was recognized for his participation and help with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association ( MIAA) volunteer community outreach project.

The project was coordinated by the recreation department and included repainting the front of the Town Hall and the cleaning up of the Cocasset River Recreation Area property at Mill St.

Debbie Giardino, Recreation Director, explained to selectmen how the community service project came about.

"The MIAA reached out to us [the recreation department] for a community service project," she said.

The MIAA looks for projects to teach student athletes about responsibility.

The project was completed on a Saturday and Paicos said all the students did an "incredible job."

Solbo supervised the project and also brought the students ladders and supplies.

Selectmen also recognized Donna Phelan Tuesday night, Recreation Coordinator and Certified Pool Operator, for her top-notch care and outreach in handling the town pool operations.

According to Paicos, because of a sharp increase in the cost of pool management, the town pool was looking at a possible shut down because it would be simply too hard to afford the costs to operate it. However, Phelan was not accepting of that outcome.

"Donna dug her heels in..and managed to create a staff capability herself and saved the town $12,000 in operating expenses," said Paicos.

"This shows what Foxborough is about, and the volunteers we have," noted selectwoman Lynda Walsh.
