SIGN-UP ON AUGUST 24TH FOR “THE BIG E”
Thanks to a grant from the Eastern States Exposition, we are offering a trip to The Big E in Springfield on Thursday, September 22nd. We’ll spend the entire day experiencing all that The Big E has to offer. There is no better place to enjoy the sights, sounds and taste tempting aromas of the fall season than at The Big E, New England’s autumn tradition and the largest fair in the northeast. It’s an extravaganza with top name entertainment, major exhibits, The Big E Super Circus, the Avenue of the States, New England history and agriculture, animals, rides, shopping, crafts, a daily parade, and foods from around the world. Your motorcoach will depart from St. Mary’s parking lot at 10:00 a.m. You will board the bus for the return trip home at 6:00 p.m., arriving back in Foxboro by approximately 7:00 p.m. The grant covers the cost of admission and transportation, so we are able to offer this trip for just $2.00 per person, which will cover the driver’s tip. Please bring your payment along on the day of the trip. SIGN-UP ON AUGUST 31ST FOR JACK-O-LANTERN SPECTACULAR: Are you looking for something different and unique to try? Then come and join us as we travel to Rhode Island on Thursday, October 27th as we visit the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Begin your evening at Spumoni’s Restaurant in Pawtucket Rhode Island, one of Rhode Island’s favorite Italian & Seafood Restaurants. Your meal will include Tossed Salad; Choice of Lasagna, Chicken Parmigiana with Ziti, or Baked Scrod with Potato & Vegetable; Coffee/Tea, and Dessert. After dinner, experience the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular featured by the Early Show, CNN, & Associated Press. You will be amazed by the glow of thousands of pumpkins artfully carved depicting famous people, places and scenes. Don’t miss this Halloween hot spot! The cost for this magical evening is $63 per person including driver’s tip. Checks should be made payable to “Town of Foxborough COA.” Payment will be due by Friday, September 30th. Sign-up on for a SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS special: Join the center on Thursday, February 16, 2012 for a special day as we travel to the Providence Performing Arts Center for a matinee showing of the Broadway musical “Mary Poppins.” Your day will begin with lunch at Lancellotta’s Restaurant where you will enjoy a delightful family-style chicken dinner.  Then you are off to the show featuring the irresistible story and unforgettable songs from one of the most popular Disney films of all time, plus brand new breathtaking dance numbers and spectacular stage-craft.  “Mary Poppins” is everything you could ever want in a hit Broadway show! Your trip includes roundtrip transportation, lunch at Lancellotta’s and admission to “Mary Poppins.” The cost for this magical day is $91 per person including driver’s tip. Checks should be made payable to “Town of Foxborough COA.” Payment will be due by Friday, August 19th. Your motorcoach bus will depart from St. Mary’s Church parking lot at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, February 16th  and will return home at approximately 4:45 p.m. Sign-up for this opportunity by calling the senior center at 508-543-1252 on Wednesday, July 27th beginning at 8:00 a.m.

‘Cool’ Classics. Beat the heat and humidity by coming to the senior center for some ‘cool’ movie classics during the hot summer months. Take advantage of our nice air-conditioned environment while you watch an oldie-but-goodie movie, enjoy some popcorn, and socialize with each other. The movies will be shown on Thursdays at either 11:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. Please feel free to bring your lunch along to have either before or after the film in our “Coffee Connection.”  Please give us a call at 508-543-1252 to let us know that you will be coming. The schedule is as follows:

  • August 25th @ 1:00 p.m.: “Anchors Aweigh” (compliments of Frank Barresi)
  • September 8th @11:00 a.m.: “Three Little Words” (compliments of Frank Barresi)

Council on Aging Summer Cookouts. Thursday September 1 starting at 5:00 p.m. The price is $3.00.

Friends Annual Membership Drive. The Friends of Foxboro Seniors’ annual membership drive for the 7/1/11 – 6/30/12 year is currently taking place.  The annual dues are $7.00.  Friends of Foxboro Seniors, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 to raise supplemental funds for the Council on Aging to provide programs, activities and other services to Foxboro’s seniors. The Friends’ Membership Application can be found on line at www.foxboroughma.gov. Click on Departments under Town Links, then click on Council on Aging, then click on Friends of Foxboro Seniors under Information Links to print the application. All dues and donations must be mailed to Friends of Foxboro Seniors, Inc., P.O. Box 116, Foxboro, MA 02035.

Senior Supper Program. Caritas Norwood Hospital is offering a Senior Supper Program in their cafeteria located on the basement level of the Lorusso Building, Norwood Hospital, 800 Washington Street, Norwood.  Suppers are served Monday through Friday from 4:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. (not on weekends or holidays) to individuals who are 55 years of age and older. The cost of your meal is $5.50 and consists of an entrée, beverage, and either a gelatin, pudding or soup.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND PROGRAMS: “COPING WITH GRIEF” SUPORT GROUP: Beacon Hospice is beginning a new grief support group and educational series, “Coping with Grief,” for anyone who is experiencing grief and loss due to the death of a spouse/partner, parent, close friend or another loved one. Sessions will take place on Wednesday afternoons (every other week) from 1:00-2:30PM beginning September 7, 2011 at the Foxborough Senior Center, 75 Central Street.  This group is free of charge and open to anyone in the community but pre-registration is required by calling Scott A. Ciosek, M.Div., Bereavement Coordinator, at 508-747-7222.  

TRIAD: What is TRIAD? TRIAD is part of a national program that is a three-way partnership between seniors, law enforcement agencies, and the Council on Aging. This partnership works together to reduce criminal victimization of senior citizens and to enhance their awareness of support services. TRIAD also works to increase senior participation in crime prevention and detection programs. The purpose is to reduce crime against seniors, and help improve the quality of life of all citizens, especially seniors. TRIAD, a senior citizen run and directed group, currently has openings for volunteer leader positions. Use this opportunity to bring forward your safety issues and concerns by becoming involved in this important organization. TRIAD meetings are usually held on the third Wednesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. Our next meeting will be on August 17th. Everyone is welcome to attend these informational sessions.  For information on the TRIAD programs, please call the senior center at 508-543-1252.

PAINT IN A DAY: Come and explore your creative talents at the senior center.  You will amaze yourself when you leave that afternoon with a fantastic painting done by you … enjoy a Bob MacLeod painting class, and you’ll want to come back for more!  This class is for everyone, not just the experienced, so give it a try!  Bob MacLeod’s next visit to the senior center will be on Wednesday, August 10th at 10:00 a.m. The cost of the class is $30 and includes everything you will need to complete your painting that day.  Bring your lunch and plan on staying until approximately 3:30 p.m.  Please bring along your own paper towels.
