NVPO to Perform ‘Russian Favorites’

'Russian Favorites' is NVPO's final concert of the season.

The Neponset Valley Philharmonic Orchestra (NVPO) will perform it's final concert of the season, entitled “Russian Favorites”, on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 3 p.m. at King Philip Regional High School.

Well-loved symphonic staple, Symphony No. 5 in D Minor by Dmitri Shostakovich will be featured in the concert. According to NVPO, this symphony, written in 1937, was Shostakovich’s only way to save his art and his life in Stalinist Russia

Malcolm Arnold’s Tam o’Shanter Overture, rollicking music telling the story of a man who stayed too long at the pub, based on the poem by Robert Burnes will be performed. Also featured will be Reinhold Glière’s Harp Concerto, Op. 74, which will be performed with the very talented New England harpist, Colleen Potter Thorburn.
