Celebrate Ocean Spray's Fourth Annual Cranberry Harvest at Patriot Place

Fall Harvest Celebration at Patriot Place will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a cranberry harvest behind Bass Pro Shops and other activities throughout Patriot Place's North Marketplace.

If you love fall in New England then you won’t want to miss Ocean Spray’s fourth annual Fall Harvest Celebration at Patriot Place on Saturday, Oct. 19. The all-day event is free, open to the public, and perfect for families looking to experience a wide variety of fall fun. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with the Ocean Spray Cranberry Harvest at the cranberry bog behind Bass Pro Shops.

“This is our fourth year celebrating the Fall Harvest of the Ocean Spray cranberry bog and it is always a great day for families to come to Patriot Place and enjoy the wonderful natural setting we have here behind Bass Pro Shops,” said Patriot Place General Manager Brian Earley. “Hayrides, apples, cool music and outdoor activities with such a New England feel make the Harvest Festival one of my favorite events of our year at Patriot Place.”

Dormant for years, the bog was brought back to life by Ocean Spray, which harvested it for the first time at Patriot Place in 2011. The 2013 harvest will be open for public viewing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offers families a great photo opportunity while Ocean Spray cranberry farmers harvest the fruit of their labor.

A Healthful Fruit from a Good Place

Can’t visit the bog? Don’t worry! Visitors of all ages can still learn about the cranberry’s rich heritage. Below are some fun facts about the cranberry:

  • Cranberries are one of only three native fruits cultivated in the United States.
  • Contrary to popular belief, cranberries do not grow in water. They grow on vines in beds layered with sand, peat, gravel and clay. These beds, commonly known as "bogs," were originally made by glacial deposits.
  • In addition to Massachusetts, the major growing areas for cranberries are New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Quebec, and Chile.
  • Cranberries are naturally low in sugar. They are fat-free, cholesterol-free and a good source of fiber.
  • The power of the cranberry centers on its well-documented urinary tract health benefits and emerging heart health properties.
  • Americans consume 400 million pounds of cranberries a year; 80 million pounds during Thanksgiving week.
  • This year, 80 percent of the cranberries harvested will be consumed in North America; the rest will be shipped overseas where the cranberry is gaining popularity.
  • It takes 4,400 pressed cranberries to make one gallon of cranberry juice.
