Heavy Snow Puts Roofs At Risk
Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency publishes guidelines for roof safety.
The constant stream of heavy snow is not only causing a strain on our muscles and backs, but our roofs as well. Reports of a collapsed garage roof this morning in Lynn, Massachusetts, which officials claim to be caused from build up of heavy snow, has many residents questioning their own roofs and safety. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) released safety guidelines and precautionary measures that residents can use to ensure their roofs are capable of withstanding the weight of the constant snowfall. MEMA states in their guidelines that heavy snow piled on roofs "can act as a sponge, absorbing any additional rain and sleet, causing extra weight and stress to be added."
