Foxborough Schools Net $24K in Grants to Enhance Food Service Program

Foxborough Schools Food Service Director Allison Johnson has secured $24,657 in grants to date to bolster food service around the district.

In her first year as Foxborough’s Food Service Director, Allison Johnson has made a tremendous effort to provide healthier options for students, promote wellness and bolster the district’s food program. And now Johnson has added $24,657 through a series of grants she applied for last June to continue the growth of the program. The money will be allocated to all five schools to enhance food service and continue the program’s development. The money secured through several New England & Dairy Council grants will be used for the following: “Dairy Council has been very helpful to us this year,” Johnson said. Foxborough High and Taylor Elementary Schools Join ‘Boston Strong Day’ Efforts for Marathon Victims

Foxborough students will wear their favorite sports shirts and hats to show off their Boston pride Friday and a voluntary fundraiser has been set up to collect donations for The One Fund Boston to aid Marathon victims.

Foxborough students at Igo Elementary, Ahern Middle, Foxborough High and Taylor Elementary schools are encouraged to wear their favorite Boston sports shirts and hats to school Friday to celebrate "Boston Strong Day" and show support for all those affected by last week's attacks on the Boston Marathon. Igo Elementary School principal Mike Stanton announced the special spirit day in an e-mail to parents earlier this week. "Students and staff are encouraged to wear their favorite Boston shirt and/or hat to school to show off their pride in our wonderful city," Stanton said. Foxborough High Senior Named Semifinalist in Massachusetts’ Intel Science Talent Search

Foxborough High School senior Aheli Chattopadhayay was one of 300 students from across the country and one of five from Massachusetts to be named a semifinalist in one of the nation’s most prestigious science research competitions.

Foxborough Schools Ready to Support Students; Remember Boston Marathon Victims After Tragedy

All public schools will resume class Monday with a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings, according to Foxborough Superintendent of Schools Debra Spinelli.

Monday is Foxborough's first day of school since last week’s deadly attacks on the Boston Marathon and Superintendent of Schools Debra Spinelli said staff is ready for the return of students who may have questions about the tragedy. “Faced with yet another incident of inexplicable violence that has taken the life of another young child and other innocent people, we know we will likely face more questions from our students,” Spinelli said. “All schools will have counselors on hand to talk with children who need support. Patriot Place, a popular family destination for school vacation week activities, has announced its schedule for April school vacation.   The signature school vacation event and a Patriots Day tradition is the opportunity to take photos on the Gillette Stadium field. Patriot Place and its charitable partner Cradles to Crayons will give Patriots fans the chance to receive a professional photo on the field with the Patriots Cheerleaders and Pat Patriot on Monday, April 15. Technology Highlights Foxborough Schools Proposed Budget of $29.3M

Educational technology is a focus of the FY14 school budget, which will go before voters at May's Town Meeting.

As May's Town Meeting approaches, school officials have reviewed and discussed the proposed $29.3 million FY14 budget for Foxborough Public Schools. The proposed total of $29,338,877 will see an increase of $1,173,144 (4.17 percent) over the FY13 budget of $28,165,733. It should be mandatory for the Superintendent of Schools to submit a zero increased budget every year, showing the effect of this zero increase on the school system. A second, optional, budget can then also be submitted so that the people in this town can make an informed decision, at town meeting, as to whether or not we want to fund these increases!! Foxborough Schools Look to Add 70 Surveillance Cameras to Boost Safety Throughout District

Foxborough Public Schools officials say cameras would improve security at each of the town's five schools and would cost $122,000 to install.

Foxborough voters will be asked at Town Meeting in May to approve a plan presented by Foxborough Public Schools officials to install 70 surveillance cameras at each of the town's five schools to improve security. The cost of the project is estimated at $112,000. The cameras would be installed on the exterior of the buildings as well as in main corridors and possibly in common areas like libraries, media rooms and cafeterias, according to Foxborough Public Schools Superintendent Debra Spinelli. Currently, the only cameras in operation are at the main entrances of each of the five schools. “Right now everything is kind of blind,” Spinelli said. Foxborough Schools Won’t Make Up Snow Day on Good Friday

Foxborough Schools Superintendent Debra Spinelli said schools will not be in session on Good Friday, March 29.

While many school districts around the state are adding a day of school on Good Friday to make up for the excessive amount of snow days this winter, Foxborough Public Schools will remain closed for the religious holiday. “We will not be in session on Good Friday,” said Foxborough Schools Superintendent Debra Spinelli. “Our last day of school is now Tuesday, June 25.” Spinelli said unlike other school districts that will be in session on Good Friday, Foxborough has not exceeded its five allotted snow days. “We have used exactly five snow days, which are built into our calendar, so we have not yet gone beyond the five allotted snow days that are planned as part of the calendar,” Spinelli said. “Were we to go beyond the five planned snow days…

Foxborough Teachers are Transforming Teaching Through Technology in the Classroom

The school committee learned the uses of a document camera are endless for teaching and learning in Foxborough classrooms.

Technology in the classroom was on display at Monday's School Committee meeting at Foxborough High School as Ahern Middle School math teacher Adam Gravit was joined by seventh grader Caroline Cutillo to showcase the wonders of a document camera. The simple technology was made available through a FACES grant that is enhancing learning. Gravit shared with the committee how the document camera has made a difference to teaching and learning in the classroom. Threat of Winter Storm Postpones Tuesday's MCAS Testing

Due to the expected winter storm Monday night into Tuesday morning, the state announced the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25.

With much of Massachusetts expecting a winter storm Monday night into Tuesday morning, the state's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has decided to postpone Tuesday's MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 to Monday, March 25. The decision was announced on DOE's website. Originally, this composition test was scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, but in an effort to make sure all schools administer the test on the same day, "all schools must administer the ELA Composition test to students in grades 4, 7, and 10 on Monday, March 25, including schools that are not affected by the weather," according to a memo from Elizabeth Davis, Associate Commissioner of Student Assessment.
