Five Foxborough High School students received national accolades for their performances in the prestigious Essentially Ellington Competition earlier this month.
Foxborough was once again well represented at the annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival at Lincoln Center in New York City earlier this month as five students were recognized for their performances. Alex Olsen was awarded outstanding piano for his performance at the 18th annual Ellington competition held May 10-12. Four other Foxborough musicians received honorable mentions: “That is amazing to have five of our students recognized for their individual [musical talents] on such a nationally competitive level,” said Foxborough Schools Superintendent Debra Spinelli. “Very proud of them.” School Committee chair Katie Adair, whose son, Nick, received recognition for his performance on the drums, attended the …

Town Meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. inside Foxborough High School’s auditorium. Here’s what you need to know.
Foxborough voters will gather inside the auditorium of Foxborough High School Monday night to say "Yes" or "No" to 29 warrant articles, including the proposed TIF for Invensys (Article 28) and the installation of 70 surveillance cameras throughout Foxborough’s five public schools. Foxborough selectman James DeVellis encouraged residents to get out and exercise their democratic right as voters. “[A lot of people] worked hard on 29 articles,” DeVellis said. “You hate to see only a couple hundred people come out for a population that we have and decide on some important articles. … If you can come out and vote please do so.” To view the town’s warrant, click here. Foxborough's Advisory Committee has announced its positions on 20 articles, …

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.
Newsweek has ranked high schools nationally, but the criteria the publication used left Foxborough High School off of the list. The school also went unranked in the top 500 nationally by US News, but was listed in Boston Magazine's top 50 list, coming in at #42. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about the ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year …

Foxborough High School boys’ lacrosse goes from 7-2 to 4-5 after forfeiting three non-league wins for playing an ineligible player in those contests, according to The Sun Chronicle.
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has determined the Foxborough High School boys’ lacrosse team used an ineligible player in three non-league contests over April vacation and as such, must forfeit those three victories. An ineligible player was reportedly used in Foxborough’s two victories over Bishop Feehan on April 13 and 16 and a victory over Reading on April 18. According to The Sun Chronicle, the student-athlete was ruled academically ineligible in mid-April but miscommunication between administrators and the athletic department ultimately led to the violation. “A bunch of things had to go wrong for this to happen,” interim Athletic Director Pat Nash told The Sun Chronicle. “Unfortunately, they did. It’s kind of a…
A helicopter from Blue Hills Helicopter Company arrived at Foxborough High School Wednesday to help students film an aerial scene as part of their student video project.
Foxborough High School students, led by senior Virag Vora, have been working on a school-wide Lip Dub video as this year’s student video project since February and spent Wednesday wrapping up the project’s final scene Wednesday in dramatic fashion. “They wanted their ending to be dramatic, in which their camera is lifted from the ground ad swoops up into the sky,” said Foxborough Superintendent of Schools Debra Spinelli. To get the dramatic – and creative shot – Spinelli enlisted the assistance of Blue Hills Helicopter Company out of Norwood, which “graciously donated” a helicopter to help shoot the final scene. The helicopter landed on the baseball field of Foxborough High School just before 1 p.m. Wednesday and Vora directed the final …

Foxborough students wore their favorite Boston shirts and hats to show off their Boston pride Friday and collect donations for The One Fund Boston to aid Marathon victims.
Students from around the Foxborough School District showed they were “Boston Strong” Friday by wearing their favorite Boston shirts and hats to show support of their city and collect donations for The One Fund Boston to aid Marathon victims. Students at Igo Elementary School were able to raise $682.20 to donate to The One Fund Boston through its special spirit day Friday. “I’m so proud of our students,” said Igo principal Mike Stanton. “The students raised $682.20, which I think will be a little higher once a few additional donations are turned in on Monday.” Ahern Middle School principal Sue Abrams said students were able to raise over $800 for Marathon victims. Foxborough High School, Taylor Elementary School and Foxborough Regional …

Foxborough beat Hockomock League foe Milford, 16-3 at State Hospital Field Monday to push its record to 5-0.
Foxborough boys’ lacrosse coach Matt Noone will be the first to tell you it doesn’t matter what your team does in April as much as it does in May, but Monday’s 16-3 victory over Milford was a statement to the rest of the Hockomock League. Beware of the Warriors. “We are trying to establish ourselves in the Hock,” Noone said. “It seems like the Davenport [Division] is the strength of the league this year and that’s not typically the case so we just wanted to make a statement against Milford.” Foxborough (5-0, 3-0) was led offensively by Tyler Ames’ six goals. “Tyler has got some great numbers and he’s our general out there on offense,” Noone said. “Him and [Alex] Pacetti.” Pacetti and Matt Stamatov each added three goals on a day that seven…

Scenes from Wednesday's Foxboro-Stoughton High School baseball game.
Stoughton capitalized on three Foxborough errors in the second inning to plate five runs enroute to a 7-0 victory over the Warriors Wednesday afternoon at Foxborough High School. Stoughton’s Jake Gibb and Pat Raeke opened the second inning with back-to-back hits off FHS starter Josh Patkin. A Foxborough error put Kaleb Ballou on to load the bases with no outs and a second error on a ball hit by Jovani Pires plated two to get The Black Knights on the board. A ground out by Pat Jackman scored Ballou from third. Foxborough’s third error in the frame made it 4-0 followed by an RBI double by Mike Connelly to push the lead to 5-0. That was all the offense Mike Gallagher needed as the righthander allowed just two hits over four shutout innings, …

Mike Atwood, a longtime coach and runner in the area, shared his thoughts and experience from Monday's attacks on the Boston Marathon.
Editor's note: Mike Atwood, with local ties to Attleboro (ran at Bishop Feehan), Foxborough (coached at Foxborough High and teaches at Foxborough Regional Charter School), Easton (coached at Oliver Ames) and Mansfield (coached at MHS) shared his thoughts from Monday's tragedy on his Facebook page Tuesday. This was personal. Boston is my city, where I run, where I went to college, where my family spends our weekends, where I go to Red Sox games with my dad, who was born there 81 years ago. It is our playground. Yesterday started out as a monumental day that I had obsessed about for six months, a day where my running club celebrated our hard work, a day where I ran past enthusiastically cheering friends on the route, friends from high school…

My daughter, Krista Perry, grew up in Seekonk and ran in the Boston Marathon (she is also the former editor of Chelmsford Patch). She was stopped 6 miles from the finish line and, thank God, is fine. She also expressed her thoughts after yesterday's tragedy. The link to her blog is: http://beyondtheboards.net/2013/04/16/my-city-my-marathon/ Carol Perry   more ›
