This award is presented annually to individuals or organizations for their steadfast dedication and partnership with the Hockomock Area YMCA to meet the changing needs of our community. The Hockomock Area YMCA invites area residents to wear red on Friday, Feb. 8 for the ‘Healthy Hearts’ Family Valentine Dance on Friday, Feb. 8th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Y's Bernon Family Branch (45 Forge Hill Rd., Franklin) and Invensys Foxboro Branch (67 Mechanic St., Foxborough) and 6-8 p.m. at the Y's North Attleboro Branch (300 Elmwood St., North Attleboro). This free event guarantees a good time for all with a DJ and lots of dancing, including 20 minute intervals of line dances for teens and follow-the-leader songs for preschoolers. The Hockomock Area YMCA sponsored its sixth annual Wing Off Saturday at Fusion 5 Sports Bar in Foxborough. Six restaurants were competing for a chance to be crowned the "best wings" in the area. The two categories were best buffalo and most creative. Chieftain Pub (Plainville) was crowned Best Buffalo Wiing. Twenty8 of Foxborough was crowned most unique wing, which was called “Chef Jason Ward’s Apple Coffee Chili Wing.” The Hockomock YMCA is grateful to its event sponsors, including Blue Hill Plumbing & Heating of North Attleboro and Bob Rogers Roofing of Holliston and Auburn. (Press Release) Children attending Camp at the Hockomock Area YMCA’s Invensys Foxboro Branch are in for a real treat this summer. The YMCA announced today that an outdoor aquatic center will open this month, just in time for Summer Camp. According to Ed Hurley, President of the Hockomock Area YMCA, “Thanks to the generosity of the Spier Family, our shared vision will become a reality in June. Alex and Sonja’s commitment to their community and their support of kids and families served by our YMCA is an inspiration.” The outdoor aquatic center will feature a 25-yard pool, changing rooms and improvements to the outdoor activity area at the Invensys Foxboro Branch. Those who are not currently members should look into signing their family up as temporary members for the vacation week for a small fee. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a twelve-week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors who have become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. The program is offered without cost to the participants. Our goal is to help patients build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. Certified Hockomock Area YMCA health and wellness instructors give personal individualized instruction to the participants. The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, nutrition, and supportive cancer care. Local schools will celebrate Massachusetts Walk to School Day on May 4.
Foxboro, Sharon and Mansfield Elementary Schools will be joining schools from around the Commonwealth to celebrate Massachusetts Walk and Bicycle to School Day on May 4, 2011, as part of the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School program. Students and their families will be walking or bicycling to school along with parents, teachers, Y staff and community leaders. Families are encouraged to walk from home if they reside 1 mile from school, or make plans to walk from a friend or neighbors house. The Foxboro YMCA and school officials have also designated specific meeting locations throughout the town for families to meet at and continue the walk to school which ranges from ¾ mile to 1 ¼ mile.
