Editors' Picks: Most Notable Sports Moment of 2012

Your group of local patch editors weighs in on the standout sports moments of the year.

Editor's Note: The following is part of a special "end-of-the-year" series in which local editors from your nearby Patch towns highlight their favorites in various topics.   Jonathan Friedman - Editor, Attleboro-Seekonk Patch From my earliest days through college, I was a competitive swimmer. I was never good enough to be an Olympian, but I have a tremendous respect for those who are. And every four years, it is exciting to see swimming in the spotlight. Special kudos go to Michael Phelps, who looked like he had lost his magic when he didn't even win a medal in his first individual event, the 400 IM (first time since 2000 that had happened), but then regained it later in the week with spectacular wins in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, while…

Notes & Quotes from Super Bowl XLVI

An inside look at the numbers, story lines and fun facts from the game.

INDIANAPOLIS – With the media hoopla just about over before game time and the players hunkered down at their hotels before Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVI match, both the Giants and Patriots seemed to be ready for what many are predicting could be one of the best Super Bowl games of all-time. Brady vs. Manning, Coughlin vs. Belichick, New York vs. New England, a rematch of 2007, a rematch of the game earlier this season, Eli in Peyton’s city, the story lines have been never-ending. What’s more are the individual stories every player brings into this game; their previous teams, their journey to the big game, overcoming adversity, their family lines and much more. Every player enters the game with a story and leaves Sunday night adding to their …

Foxborough Selectmen Discuss Friendly Super Bowl Wager

Foxborough selectmen discussed reaching out to the board of selectmen in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

In what is the annual tradition of a "friendly bet" between government officials during championship games, this year's Super Bowl match up between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants proves no different. On the heels of Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's "friendly Super Bowl wager," Foxborough selectmen discussed reaching out to the board of selectmen in East Rutherford, New Jersey to place their own "choice bet." "Last time we were in the Super Bowl with the Giants, [we reached out] to the board in East Rutherford," said selectman Mark Sullivan.  Board members recalled the last Super Bowl between the rival teams, making a "choice bet" to wager clam chowder on Foxborough's end and …

Patriots Lose Second in Row By Way of Deja Vu

The Patriots hosted the New York Giants and lost the game, their chance for Super Bowl revenge and perhaps lost their way. Is this who they are?

The Patriots game on Sunday against the New York Giants can easily be described as a "team loss."  Most teams will say you lose and win as a team, but none more so than the Patriots game against the New York Giants.  It was a game that gave the Patriots a chance to rebound from a tough loss to the Steelers last week, and in a sense, gain some revenge on the Giants for ruining the Patriots hopes of a perfect season back in February 2008.   The game didn't start out well for either team offensively.  In fact, th Patriots and Giants both played poorly in the first half.  The game was scoreless at halftime; tthe first time this has occurred so far in the 2011 NFL season. The second half was not much better for the Patriots and included fumbles…

Patched Into Gillette For The Return Of The Giants

The New York Giants travel to Gillette as the Patriots host the team that derailed their hopes of a perfect season in Super Bowl XLII.

Media day at Gillette had a different feel to. It could have been for a number of reasons including the loss to the Steelers on Sunday, the return of the New York Giants or the reported incident allegedly involving Julian Edelman.   One way or another, the Patriots put aside the loss to Pittsburgh and did their best to deflect the media avalanche that has resulted since the alleged incident involving Edelman. Bill Belichick took the podium to address the media. "On to the Giants, a real good Football team. Obviously defensively, very strong pass rush, good pass defense. Offensively, good quarterback, good receivers, good offensive line, good backs. They make plays in the kicking game, good returners, good coverage players, and you know Tom…

Preseason Wrap Up: Starters Play, Haynesworth Debuts as Patriots Host the Giants

The starters suited up for the final dress rehearsal of 2011 Thursday night at Gillette.

The New England Patriots, after being torn apart by the Detroit Lions last Saturday, hosted the New York Giants for the final preseason game of 2011. Headlines: Most of the starters played. Albert Haynesworth debuts, making a big tackle early in the first quarter. Shaun Ellis suited up as well. Ochocinco played and made a nice catch on a hitch route from Tom Brady. Quarter by Quarter:   First Quarter: Ras-I Dowling the rookie cornerback, also played and made an early first impression when he made a key block on a fumble return from teammate Patrick Chung on the Giants first offensive series from scrimmage. Chung returned the ball to inside the 1 yard line to give Brady and the Patriots a first and goal just like that.  The very next play, …
