Foxborough's school committee reviewed the district's strategic plan at the April 25 meeting.
Discussions about new technology, continued dynamic curriculum offerings and improved communication between students, parents and the community are all apart of Foxborough's strategic plan for it's school system. Work sessions on these and other topics having been ongoing between strategic task force members, faculty and school administration leaders. Foxborough's school committee reviewed the plan at Monday night's meeting and motioned to accept the presented draft of the strategic plan executive summary after lengthy discussion and a few tweaks. In case you missed it, here's a rundown on just a couple of stories that ran on Foxborough Patch last week.
The week kicked off at the school committee meeting. At the meeting, Superintendent Christopher Martes, announced that Staff Development Day was canceled due to the constant stream of snowstorms. A new program of studies for the High School was also announced at the committee meeting. The school is looking to make changes in its course offerings to help better prepare students for college. The town selectman meeting mainly focused on Michael Intoccia, who according to town records, owed $23,159.11 in taxes that “had been delinquent for over a year.” Intoccia's lawyer, Robert Shelmerdine, was present at the meeting and confirmed that payment for interest fees, penalties, and taxes were paid in full prior to the start of the meeting. Foxborough High School to offer new programs of study to better prepare students for college.
The Foxborough School Committee voted unanimously in last night's meeting to implement a new 2011-2012 program of studies at the high school. Principal Jeffrey Theodoss, head of guidance Laureen White and Joe O'Neil, college admission counselor at Foxborough High School, presented the proposed new program to the committee. The approved proposal aims at offering courses to students that are structured in a college format. The first program change will be seen in the English Department for grade 12 english curriculum. Seniors will be able to choose from 2 program options. If a student chooses option A, they will be electing to take a full year of AP English Literature and Composition. Foxborough High School’s career specialist Ellen Pillsbury explains career choices and the importance of internships.
At Foxborough High School, Ellen Pillsbury's job as the career specialist is to guide the students into their career paths. Pillsbury has worked in the public school system for 11 years. She currently serves as the career specialist at Foxborough High School where she mentors and guides students on career paths, applying to college and overall life goals. “Everyday is different. I love working with kids," said Pillsbury.."My job is the kind of job that you could have forever. For me, it’s always kids first.” Her favorite day of the week is Thursday because that's when she spends her evening at Children’s Hospital where she gives out hugs to children on the oncology floor. For younger students, it is good to be aware of how to use LinkedIn, once you are eligible to participate. Younger students can participate in tip #1, even off of LinkedIn.
