Gov. Patrick Discusses Taxes and Job Growth at Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce in Norwood

Gov. Deval Patrick addressed the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce to discuss how he plans to improve the Commonwealths economic development.

With the sequester on the minds of many business owners, Governor Deval Patrick said it is still too early to tell what can happen in Massachusetts during a discussion at the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce in Norwood Tuesday. "The question is if it that does happen, will it happen right away? Or at the next fiscal year? We don't know," Patrick said. The governor was confident during his economic opportunities and job growth discussion at the NVCC Tuesday the investments that are currently being made in education and infrastructure will not only help the economy, but will also help future generations. "I thought to myself, 'Our grandparents gave us that.'  Like Route 3 and I-95 or the street I came down to get here this morning; like …

Gov. Patrick Names William 'Mo' Cowan Interim Senator

Markey is in, Lynch set to make an announcement Thursday and Brown reportedly considering throwing his hat into the race following Tuesday’s nomination of John Kerry as Secretary of State.

With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in his unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens an interim senator has to be named. On Wednesday, Governor Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Patch reported in December that Cowan, a Stoughton resident, would be stepping down this month and returning to the private sector. Besides being Patrick’s former chief of staff, Cowan also served as chief legal counsel to Governor Patrick, having served in the Patrick-Murray …

Patrick-Murray Administration Awards $102K Grant to Foxborough Business

The Foxborough business' $102,220 grant is part of a $6.8 million Workforce Training Fund Grant package given to 87 Massachusetts companies.

Eighty-seven businesses from 66 towns across Massachusetts are getting a little extra money to put toward developing their staff. Governor Deval Patrick's office announced Thursday a $6.8 million package of grants to put toward workplace training. One of those grants is coming to Foxborough.  Foxborough-based Accutech Packaging, Inc., a manufacturing company that offers paper and paperboard items and related materials and machinery, received $102,220 to train 42 employees, according to a press release issued Thursday. Five additional jobs will be created as a result of training. "We are focused on addressing the skills gap issue in the Commonwealth so that workers can compete in today’s ever-changing jobs market,” said Governor Deval …

Gov. Patrick Names Foxborough Native Chief of Staff

Foxborough native Brendan Ryan, currently serving as Gov. Deval Patrick's Director of Communications, has been appointed Chief of Staff.

Gov. Deval Patrick announced earlier this week that Foxborough native Brendan Ryan, currently Director of Communications, will succeed William “Mo” Cowan as the Governor's Chief of Staff beginning in January 2013. “Brendan is well-prepared for this larger role," Gov. Patrick said. "He has been at my side from the start, is deeply committed to our mission, and has grown tremendously as a leader. As we build on the progress of the last six years, Brendan brings continuity, proven talent, and the deep respect of the whole team. We are in good hands." However, the Foxborough native has a hard act to follow. “Mo has been an exceptional chief of staff," Gov. Patrick said. "He has been a brilliant strategist, an effective executive, a wise …

Legislature Rejects Governor Patrick's 'Three-Strikes' Amendment

The governor on Saturday sent 'Melissa's Bill' back to the Legislature.

Gov. Deval Patrick set in motion a wave of criticism when he proposed an amendment to the "three strikes"/Melissa's Bill on the grounds it lacked sufficient provisions for judicial discretion.  Warning of possible unintended "unjust consequences" that can arise from mandatory sentencing laws, Patrick wrote in a letter to the Legislature, "None of us is wise or prescient enough to foresee each and every circumstance in which the new habitual offender provisions may apply." On Monday afternoon, the House rejected Patrick's amendment by a vote of 132-23, according to The Boston Globe. Later on Monday, the Senate also rejected the amendment, according to WCVB, Channel 5. The bill's fate is up in the air, as the legislature's summer session …

Poll: Gov. Deval Patrick as Attorney General?

Would Governor Deval Patrick be a good fit as Attorney General?

With U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder being held in contempt by a Republican heavy House of Representatives, pundits are saying the chances of a new Attorney General are likely should Obama serve in a second term, according to the Boston Herald. Peter Ubertaccio, a professor at Stonehill College in Easton, said Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick may be a good fit. “The chances of a new attorney general in a second Obama administration, if there is one, has increased dramatically,” Ubertaccio told the Herald. "This controversy doesn’t seem to be going away, and there’s traditionally turnover in second terms. ... If the governor is not harboring presidential aspirations, I think he’d be a natural fit for it.” For the full story in the …

5 Things to Know About Next Year's Proposed State Budget

The bill increases public aid while not raising taxes.

The House and Senate overwhelming passed a $32.5 billion budget last week.  Gov. Deval Patrick now has until July 8 to review and sign it, or to issue vetoes.  The thrust of the bill is to shore up aid to public programs while at the same time not increasing the burden to taxpayers. Overall, the 2013 budget is about 3 percent higher than this year's, but considerably tighter than previous recent years. Here are some of the bill's highlights:  1. It includes no new taxes or fees. Instead, $516 million will be taken from existing funds, including $350 million from the state's rainy day fund, leaving it over a billion dollars in the black. Still, that's down from the $2.2 billion it had in 2008. 2. It tightens welfare. The bill would limit …
