Work on Turf Field Project Expected to Begin by End of January

Turf’s Up chair James DeVellis met with Foxborough’s Conservation Commission Monday and hopes to begin clearing trees behind Foxborough High School by the end of January for the new baseball and softball fields.

So far, so good. That’s how Foxborough resident James DeVellis described the status of the recently approved community turf field project set to be constructed at the high school. That work will begin in the next couple of weeks, according to DeVellis, who called the construction schedule “aggressive.” On Monday, DeVellis met with the town’s Conservation Commission as the chair of the Turf’s Up committee to share information about the turf field project and inform them of the scheduled work to be done behind the high school near Hersey Field. “The meeting went well,” DeVellis said. “This was an informational meeting I asked for as a courtesy to let the Conservation Commission know that we will be clearing trees in the next few weeks in the…

What's Next for Foxborough's Turf Field Project?

Turf's Up chair James DeVellis said the next step in the turf field project will be a meeting among community leaders who will be involved and impacted by the town's newest field.

Foxborough said “yes” at Tuesday’s Special Town Meeting to construct a turf field at the high school, green lighting the project to take the next step. So, what is that next step? Turf’s Up chair James DeVellis said it will be setting up a meeting with everyone in town that will be involved in and affected by the turf field. “The first thing I want to do is have a meeting with all the school, coaches and directors to make sure I can hear exactly what their needs are,” DeVellis said. “With so many sports, age groups and summer leagues there will undoubtedly be an inconvenience at some level and short of dropping [the turf field] from a helicopter onto the area, something has to give. Hopefully, with everyone in one room, we can figure out a…

Foxborough Voters Approve Turf Field Project at Tuesday's Special Town Meeting

Foxborough's voters said "yes" to building a community turf field at the high school during Tuesday's Special Town Meeting.

Editor's note: This story will be updated. Foxborough is finally getting a turf field. After years of planning, fundraising and volunteering, Turf's Up's proposal passed its final test Tuesday at Special Town Meeting when 260 of 389 voters said "yes" to Article 6, effectively bringing a community turf field to Foxborough High School. Turf's Up is a local committee comprised of volunteers and chaired by Foxborough resident and Board of Seletmen chair James DeVellis. The committee's vision for a turf field in Foxborough began four years ago and culminated Tuesday night when Article 6 passed Special Town Meeting, 260-129. By approving Article 6, the town agreed to appropriate $125,000 from the town's Overlay Surplus to be used for the …

School Committee to Sponsor Warrant Article for Foxborough’s Turf Field Project

Voters are likely to be asked to approve the turf field article at December’s Town Meeting.

James DeVellis, president of Turf’s Up – a volunteer committee dedicated to bringing a turf field to town, described Monday’s meeting with Foxborough’s School Committee as a “home run.” “The [School Committee] voted [Monday] to sponsor a warrant article for [Fall] Town Meeting to bring it to the voters,” DeVellis said. “I think there’s enough support.” DeVellis, who also chairs the Foxborough Board of Selectmen, met with the school committee Monday to present a revised plan to bring a synthetic turf field and track to Foxborough High School. The turf complex would be used by the community as a whole – from youth to high school sports programs and future FHS graduations. DeVellis said when the committee originally envisioned bringing a turf…
