The Foxborough High School girls' basketball team defeated a talented Hopkinton squad, 48-41 to capture the Warrior Winter Classic championship. Next up: The MIAA State Tournament.
The Foxborough High School girls’ basketball team proved Tuesday it’s ready for the postseason after a 48-41 win over Hopkinton in the Warrior Winter Classic championship game. “[We] showed [we] could maintain composure going into the fourth quarter when [we] were down to a great Hopkinton team and [we] really stepped it up so I am really proud of [the team],” said Foxborough head coach Lisa Downs. Defense ruled the first quarter as both teams struggled to gain any offensive momentum in the opening eight minutes. Foxborough managed to gain a 10-7 lead on Hopkinton by quarter’s end but Hopkinton chipped away at deficit in the second and trailed the Warriors by just one (19-18) at halftime. The third quarter belonged to the Hillers as …

Foxborough beat Lunenburg, 85-37 Monday to advance to Tuesday’s Warrior Classic championship game against Hopkinton. Tip-off is 6:30 p.m. at Foxborough High School.
Foxborough High School girls’ basketball coach Lisa Downs said when her team is firing on all cylinders they are “pretty fantastic to watch.” That was true Monday night. The Warriors (14-5) turned in a complete game Monday, cruising past visiting Lunenburg, 85-37 in the opening round of the Warrior Classic tournament. “[We] came out executing and played smart defense,” Downs said. “Our press was working much better [Monday] then it had been last week. … Offense rotated the ball in and out and our shot selection was much better.” It is rare that a high school basketball team can put a game away in the second quarter, but that’s exactly what the Warriors did when they outscored Lunenburg, 29-5 in the second frame to take a 48-18 lead into …

Foxborough overcame a 35-27 deficit at halftime to beat Mansfield, 57-53 Friday.
Leading 55-53 with 31 seconds remaining in regulation, the Foxborough High School girls’ basketball team needed to make a stop. A usually stingy Warriors’ defense was having an off night Friday but managed to string together enough stops in the second half, underlined by their effort in the final half minute to grind out a 57-53 victory over rival Mansfield. “They put the pedal to the medal and decided they wanted to win this game,” said Foxborough head coach Lisa Downs. With that determination came the reward of Foxborough earning a MIAA State Tournament berth – the Warriors first since the 2010-11 season and Lisa Downs’ first as a varsity head basketball coach. “I feel like we can breathe a little bit more and not always feel like we …

The Foxborough girls’ basketball team beat Milford, 58-25 Friday to improve to 6-2 on the season (4-2 in the Hockomock League).
Foxborough High School girls’ basketball coach Lisa Downs admitted she was a “little worried” heading into Friday’s game against winless Milford. “I was worried [we would] enter the game not fully mentally prepared,” Downs said. A legitimate concern, considering Foxborough’s last two games were emotional roller coasters won – and lost – in the final seconds. The Warriors knocked off Taunton late in the fourth quarter last Friday but fell to Stoughton on a buzzer-beater Tuesday. The Warriors returned home Friday and won convincingly, 58-25 to put their coach at ease. “We can breathe a little bit,” Downs said with a smile following Foxborough’s sixth win of the season. “[The] Stoughton [game] was one of those heart breakers I thought about …
