Foxborough Schools Net $24K in Grants to Enhance Food Service Program

Foxborough Schools Food Service Director Allison Johnson has secured $24,657 in grants to date to bolster food service around the district.

In her first year as Foxborough’s Food Service Director, Allison Johnson has made a tremendous effort to provide healthier options for students, promote wellness and bolster the district’s food program. And now Johnson has added $24,657 through a series of grants she applied for last June to continue the growth of the program. The money will be allocated to all five schools to enhance food service and continue the program’s development. The money secured through several New England & Dairy Council grants will be used for the following: “Dairy Council has been very helpful to us this year,” Johnson said. UPDATED: Foxborough Schools Add Healthier Food Choices for Students; Increase Lunch Prices

The Foxborough School Committee voted unanimously at its Aug. 13 meeting to increase price of student lunches by 25 cents to meet federal guidelines for school lunch programs. The district is also offering healthier foods this year.

Clarification (10:17 a.m. on Aug 22, 2012) - Foxborough Schools Superintendent Debra Spinelli says the increase in student lunch prices had to happen to meet federal guidelines for school lunch programs and federal reimbursement that goes along with those regulations. The lunch price increase was not driven by the district offering healthier foods. Student lunches will cost 25 cents more around the Foxborough School District this year to meet federal guidelines but it’s the improvements to food services that has caught Schools Superintendent Debra Spinelli's attention this summer. Great now if eliminate mandatory Spanish in our class rooms and replace it with a mandatory physical fitness program and maybe a "how to eat healthy" program we'll really be on the right track to a healthier nation.   more ›
