Bayuk, a BC graduate student, started Thursday’s scrimmage against the Red Sox at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla. and hurled a perfect bottom of the first inning. Bayuk got leadoff hitter Justin Henry to fly out to left field, Brock Holt to ground out to second base and Jackie Bradley to fly out to center. The Boston Red Sox fired Valentine after an unsuccessful year at Fenway Park.
The Boston Red Sox have fired manager Bobby Valentine after the team experienced the worst season in decades. In fact, the 69-93 record was the team’s worst since 1965 and the first time the team has finished last in the American League East in more than a decade. Valentine’s one season at the helm was full of losses and run-ins with players. Valentine, who led the New York Mets to the World Series in 2000, followed Terry Francona, a fan favorite who was dismissed a year ago after taking the team to two World Series titles. Foxborough resident Andres Burgos was one of 12 disabled military veterans to enjoy a day at Fenway Park on Aug. 7, which included taking batting practice on the field and tickets to that night's game. The event was courtesy of CVS Caremark.
Foxborough resident and United States Marines Corps veteran Andres Burgos vividly remembers everything about the morning of June 29, 2011. “I was coming back from visiting my friends in Springfield,” Burgos recalled. “I was on my motorcycle – the roads were wet - it had just finished raining. I was enjoying a nice, beautiful ride home [to Marlboro].” Burgos, who served in the US Marines Corps from 1999-2007, mostly in infantry, was knocked off his motorcycle by a hit-and-run driver but it was what happened after the initial accident that changed his life forever. “I was trying to crawl off the road,” Burgos said. “There was nothing wrong with me except for the initial shock and blunt trauma from falling off the bike.” But as Burgos was …

When you go to a bookstore, you can find "The Teammates" in the sports section, but the book about four Boston Red Sox could very easily be in the relationship aisle. With the death of Johnny Pesky last week, Bobby Doerr is the last of the four great friends and teammates still alive today. Doerr and Pesky were together at Fenway Park, both in wheelchairs, as the Red Sox celebrated the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park in April. Both Ted Williams and Dom DiMaggio proceeded their life-long friends in death. But in the "The Teammates," they will be four young baseball players coming from humble roots on the West Coast to find fame on the East Coast, while wearing Boston Red Sox uniforms in the golden days of the 1930-40s. In a busy sports week, which local team has your eye?
Welcome to one of the busiest weeks in sports. The Bruins are in a tough fight against the Washington Capitals in the first round of the playoffs. They'll be playing a game 7 on Wednesday night. The Celtics are looking to close out the NBA regular season in strong form. They'll be playing the Miami Heat on Tuesday and the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Patriots are preparing for the NFL draft, one of the biggest events on the football calendar. That three-day marathon starts on Thursday night. Oh yeah, and there's a team called the Red Sox playing its regular season. Unfortunately, given our limited number of eyes, humans are only capable of watching so much at once. A trip to Fenway Park gets the memories flowing.
It's really not about the actual structure. Truth be told, the place looks every bit of its 100 years. After nine innings, your body is a crooked mess. Unless you are under 5 feet 5 inches and weigh less than 140 pounds, you are going to be very uncomfortable for three or so hours. It costs a fortune to attend a game these days. Hot dogs come with a loan application to purchase them. You know not to even try to drive there. Still, Fenway Park is what it is. With all its warts, it's ours. After all, Fenway is a place where memories live on. How many things is our lives are still even standing 100 years later? Places like that are few and far between. In a way, Fenway is really our own fountain of youth, a place where we go to remember …

With the Boston Red Sox getting ready for opening day and celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park, there is going to be a lot of opportunity to look back at the all-time greats to wear their uniform. The Red Sox are running a voting contest at bostonredsox.com, but we're jumping the gun here with an all-time team before the season even starts. The only rule on this team is that you have to have compiled the stats as a Red Sox player and other teams you played on doesn't factor in. Ladies and gentlemen, your all-time Red Sox team: Catcher-Carlton Fisk. Jason Varitek is going to get a lot of votes in the Red Sox poll, but Fisk clearly was a much better hitter in Boston and equally defensively. For his Red Sox career, Fisk hit .284 …
