Innovations in art education helps Foxborough students reach their dreams.
For many students, public schools serve as the major provider of art education. In recent years, Foxborough Public School's Art Department has flourished because of the constant support from faculty, parents, students and the school committee. This strong support team understands the importance of art education and is constantly pushing the need for improved tools and curriculum which are needed for student’s success. At a recent school committee meeting Gerald Roy, High School Art Teacher for grades 9-12, presented an overview of the art department from 1984 through the present. In case you missed it, here's a rundown on just a couple of stories that ran on Foxborough Patch last week.
Last week marked the official launch of Foxborough Patch. Town Manager, Kevin Paicos, fielded a number of questions to kick off our launch. Paicos answered questions regarding the budget, healthcare reform, and the ongoing renovation projects in town. The New England Patriots were surprisingly defeated by the New York Jets last Sunday leaving many businesses in Foxborough disappointed. Mark Jeffery, General Manager of the Renaissance Hotel and Spa at Patriot Place, told Patch that he was looking forward to the prospect of hosting another home game because of the extra revenue boost that the games provide for business. Hunakai Studio of Fine Arts is helping to reach out and make art accessible to the community.
If there is one thing to say about Carla Carey, the executive director and instructor at Hunakai Studio of Fine Arts in Foxborough, is that she is passionate about art. Carey has been involved in the arts for the last 40 years. She graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1974. From there, she began to teach at the high school and college levels as well as at two museum schools. However, it was after her college teaching experience, that she began to seriously contemplate opening her own studio. “I thought to myself, art education could be better," said Carey. "In college, they pack over 25 students to a class. Smaller class sizes to me are paramount and skilled-based curriculum is necessary for everything that we teach.” When it …
