Charges Against Foxborough Explosives Suspect Reduced to Possession of Fireworks

The eight counts possession of destructive or incendiary device against Stephen A. Mudge Jr. of Easton and Taunton were reduced to possession of fireworks during last Friday’s hearing at Wrentham District Court, according to court documents.

The explosives charges against Stephen A. Mudge Jr. following the July 13 incident at America’s Best Value Inn on Route 1 in Foxborough have been reduced to possession of fireworks, according to court documents. Mudge, of Easton and Taunton, appeared in Wrentham District Court on Friday, Aug. 10 and saw his eight counts possession of a destructive or incendiary device reduced to eight counts possession of fireworks, according to court documents. At Mudge’s arraignment hearing on July 16, attorney Nancy Winn claimed police “may have overreacted out of caution” when they arrested her client on eight counts possession of a destructive or incendiary device because those devices were fireworks, according to The Sun Chronicle. How is this embarrassing for Foxboro? Whether the devises in question were “destructive or incendiary devices” or large fireworks does it really matter?? Both are illegal and the man was arrested. It’s not like they arrested him for devices that were legal in this state.   more ›

UPDATED: Police Evacuate America's Best Value Inn on Report of Suspicious Device

Authorities were on scene Friday afternoon to investigate the device and destroy it in the back parking lot of the hotel.

UPDATE (6:25 p.m.) - Emergency personnel destroyed what was deemed to be a "suspicious device" in the parking lot behind Americas Best Value Inn Friday afternoon. More than 20 people were evacuated from hotel at 105 Washington St. in Foxborough early Friday evening after Foxborough Police and Fire personnel responded to a report of a suspicious device in the hotel.  Tenants were able to return to their rooms nearly two hours after being evacuated.  Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad were on scene to investigate the suspicious device, and destroyed it in the back parking lot after moving to the parking lot behind the hotel around 5:30 p.m. Foxborough Patch will update with more information as it becomes available.
