Xaverian High School Wins Division 1 State Baseball Title

With their 7-1 win over Algonquin, the Xaverian baseball team claimed the Division 1 state title.

The Xaverian Hawks defeated Algonquin, 7-1, Saturday to clinch the 2012 Division 1 Baseball State Championship at Fitton Field in Worcester.

The Hawks were held to just a hit through fifth innings, but took the lead on a Chris Hoyt two-RBI double in the fifth that was inches from leaving the ballpark..

Xaverian's Alex Person struck out the side in the 6th, then sparked a rally with a leadoff double to left field. After stealing third base, Person scored Xaverian's third run when Mike LaVita reached first base and drew an errant pickoff throw.

With two outs in the bottom sixth, Tyler Wolfe drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing in Xaverian's fourth run. Chris Hoyt stepped to the plate and knocked in another two runs on a single to put the Hawks up 6-1.

A perfectly executed sacrifice fly in the seventh inning by Mike LaVita made it 7-1 Xaverian.

The six-run lead was more than Alex Person needed, as he allowed just a run and seven hits over nine innings.

During the tournament, the Hawk pitching staff pitched five complete game wins, compiled by starters Nick Ahearn, Tim Duggan and Alex Person.

Xaverian defeated No. 2 Walpole, No. 7 Silver Lake, No. 6 Norwood, No. 8 Taunton, No. 1 Lowell, and No. 10 Algonquin during their 2012 Division 1 State Championship run.

This is the school's third baseball State Championship, and second state finals appearance in three years.
