Foxborough High Warriors Ready For Spring Athletics

The spring sports season is right around the corner and the Foxborough Warriors are ready to challenge the Hockomock League.

The spring teams of Foxborough High School are gearing up for another season. Here is what you can expect from the Warriors.

Boys Lacrosse Reloading Not Rebuilding

After making it to the Eastern Massachusetts semifinals last year, the boys' lacrosse team finds themselves in a nontraditional rebuilding year. Forced to sport practically a new line up because of graduation, there are going to be plenty of new starters on opening day despite the players being no stranger to the program.

“We lost nine starters last year. We definitely plugged in holes this year that being said I think we can be as good and if not better than last year,” boys' lacrosse coach Matt Noone said.

Coming back from last year are midfielders Tyler Ames and senior captains Jake Soccorso and Noah Cronin. Villanova-bound and captain Greg Stamatov is back in net for the Warriors.

Considered to be one of the best goalies in the state, Stamatov is going to be playing behind a new defense, but he is confident that they can be just as good as last year’s group.

“We got real athletic kids this year,” Stamatov said. “I think the "D" will still be just as strong.”

On defense, senior captain Alex Noonan is back, but will be moving down low from his position with the long stick last year. Connor Lynch, Luke Valenza and Brendan Lovely all look to be in the mix on defense.

The defending Davenport Division champion Warriors kick off their season at Sharon on April 4 and have their home opener on April 6 against Barnstable.

Track Team Looking For Fast Times

With three individual entries and a relay team retuning from the New Balance Indoor National meet, the Warriors are looking get some big results on the performance list. Freshmen sensation Liz Holmes returns to the girls team. The league indoor champion in the 1000 meter run and Division 3 champion in the mile is expected to be one of the top distance runners in the league, if not the state. Andrea Marcotte returns to give the girls‘ some support in the sprints.

On the boys’ side, Kiivone Howard is poised to be a threat in the 400 after an indoor season that saw him run the 300 in the low 35 seconds.

Providence College-bound Brendan Sullivan will look to continue to lead the distance events coming off an appearance at the National meet.

The track and field teams start their season on April 3 at Stoughton, but will have to wait until April 24 to race at home against Sharon in the first of their two home meets.

Girls Tennis Ready To Improve From Last Year

The good news for the defending Hockomock League champion and South Sectional runner-up girls’ tennis team is that they have 14 freshmen to bring their roster up to 20 players. The better news is that all three varsity singles players and three varsity doubles players return for the 2012 campaign.

The Warriors are led by senior captain Alana Prinos, who is currently ranked eighth in the USTA New England Under-18 rankings and is committed to play tennis for Providence College next year.

Her younger sister, Emma Prinos, is set to be the second singles player after winning a challenge match for the spot.

“Emma’s made a lot of strides and she’s actually in a little bit stronger position this year just because of the experience of playing tournament,” head coach Peter Prinos said.

Hallie Young is set to start the year in the third singles spot, but looks sharper and better than last year, according to coach Prinos.

In doubles, the team of Caroline Muise and Megan Carter return while Mary Harris is expected to be apart of the first doubles team. Freshman Morgan Milender has the early lead to be apart of a doubles team. but its unknown whether it will be with Harris or a member of the Muise/Carter team.

The girls’ tennis team return to the courts on April 3 at Stoughton for their season opener. They return home on April 12 against Sharon after three games on the road.

Higher Numbers Benefit Boys’ Tennis

Increased numbers for the boys' tennis team can only mean good things for the team that struggled to get wins last season. Among the 19-men roster is freshman Wes Young, who surprised the team by taking the first single spot for the Warriors.

“He’s an outstanding player,” boys’ tennis head coach Dan Damish said of Young. “He needs to get the experience playing No. 1, because he’s going to play a lot of good players, but he’s taken a lot of lessons and he’s played a lot of tennis.”

Captain Peter Gallagher returns in the second spot while fellow captain Luke Shaaf will play third singles.

Fabrice Louis-Letang is likely to be back at first doubles while Tyler Aubuchon will move up from second doubles to be his partner. Currently both spots on the second doubles team are for the taking as Aiden Hyland, Brian Bortolotti, CJ Decker, and Jack Marino and all are in the running.

The boys’ tennis team’s spring campaign beings on April 3 at home vs. Stoughton.

Girls Lacrosse Under New Management

Showing signs of talent last year, this year may be the breakout season for girls’ lacrosse. The early practices have left Brittany Jameson surprised at the team’s initial fitness and conditioning levels.

“They’re looking really great,” Jameson said. “I though I’d have to teach a few girls how to do that (passing and catching) and I’m really impressed.”

The young team that only features three seniors is going to be looking towards their sophomores and juniors to give them a boost. Captains Kelsie Morahan and Abby Tepper lead a team that only lost six seniors last season.

Cecilia Lynch is assigned with the challenging task of playing goalie for the first time ever but Jameson is confident that she can fill the roll after a summer of training for the position.

Girls lacrosse start their season with a nonleague contest against Bellingham on March 30 at 3:30 p.m. at State School Field.
