Warriors Hockey Earn 9-2 Win On Senior Night

Owen Campbell had four goals and two assists. Greg Stamatov scored three goals and two assists. Nick Dowling had a pair of assists.

From start to finish there was no doubt who the better team was on the ice. Playing what will be the second of three consectuive games, the Warriors did not show many of the problems that were on display during the second period of the previous night’s game against Tri-County Millis.

“We took it too them and we played well. The whole team from both goaltenders to the last forwards out there.” Foxborough head coach Jim Genovese said.

The Warriors defeated the Minuteman Regional High School Mustangs 9-2 to get the victory on Senior Night.

Foxborough winger Owen Campbell put the Warriors on top scoring three goals in the opening period. The first goal came off a pass across the slot from Greg Stamatov at 6:21 of the first period. Campbell scored once again only 70 seconds later with a shot from the left that just found the opening for a quick 2-0 lead. The hat trick came when Stamatov found Campbell on a one-timer from behind the goal at 12:30 to end the period with a three goal lead over the Mustangs.

The trio of Stamatov, Campbell, and Nick Dowling continued to light the lamp throughout the second period. Stamatov added a hat trick of his own when he scored at 2:09 of the second. Similar to the first goal of the game, Stamatov got the shot off a pass from Campbell across the slot for a score. Dowling was also credited with an assist on the goal.

“That whole line has been huge for us. When we need a point they go out and get it,” Genovese said.

Stamatov scored another goal at 5:47 but a pair of Minuteman goals by Justin Tarani momentarily made it a 6-2 game. A third goal from Stamatov at 14:47 of the second period helped extend the lead right before the start of the second intermission.

Senior Dylan Sawyer-Griffith scored a power play goal much to the delight of the crowd who was chanting “DSG” after the goal at 3:47 of the third period.

With the Warriors playing their final regular season game as the home team at the Foxboro Sports Complex, a ceremony honoring the seniors was held before the game. Playing on a team that will return to the tournament for the first time since 2008, these seniors have seen the team go from a team struggling to wins to a team that will compete in the state tournament.

“They’ve been huge,” Genovese said of his senior players. “They worked the last 3 years to get where we are and hats off to them it was really their show.”

The win improves the Warriors’ record to 7-9-3 overall and 7-0-2 against Division 3 opponents.

The Ice Warriors return to the rink Saturday Feburary 18th for their Hockomock Crossover game vs. King Philip. Faceoff is scheduled for  7:10 at the Foxboro Sports Center.
