Foxborough Lacrosse Goalie Greg Stamatov Commits To Villanova

Foxborough High School lacrosse goalie has signed his letter of intent to attend Villanova and play lacrosse for the Wildcats.

Foxborough High School lacrosse goalie has signed his letter of intent to play lacrosse for Villanova University upon the completion of his senior year of high school. With his commitment to Villanova, the FHS senior will become the first student from the lacrosse program to play at a Division 1 program.

“I think it's a great step for him. I think it's a great step for the program and this is hopefully the first of many,” said Foxborough Lacrosse head coach Matt Noone.

Villanova’s lacrosse program has been on an upswing as of late. The Wildcats won The Colonial Athletic Association Championship in 2009 before leaving the CAA to help form the Big East’s men’s lacrosse league in 2010. At the end of the 2011 season, the Wildcats were ranked the 11th best team in the nation according to the Inside Lacrosse Top 25.

Before committing to Villanova, Stamatov looked at several other schools including Penn. State, Dartmouth, Cornell, UNC, and Duke. Villanova was chosen after narrowing the list down to Penn. State and Villanova.

“I love the coaching staff there (Villanova). It’s an up and coming program,” said Stamatov.

In addition to playing lacrosse at FHS, Stamatov is also a member of the football and hockey teams.

“I love the fact that he’s a three sport athlete. Hes not focusing on one sport to get bigger, faster, stronger. He believes in competition and I don’t think there’s anything to prepare you for the next level than competing at the highest level,” Said Noone.

Being a three sport star should help Stamatov adapt to the more intense training that college athletics is known for.

“They’re going to expect bigger things so I know what I’m gonna have to do. I’m a little nervous but I think I can deal with this,” said Stamatov.

While Stamatov has not decided what he will study, he has expressed interest in studying economics or seeking admittance into the business school.
