The Hockomock League is Expanding

Administrators voted to add Taunton High School and Milford High School starting in the 2012-2013 season.

The Hockomock League will be expanding once again. In a vote that was taken at King Philip Regional High School on June 10th, league administrators voted to add Taunton High School and Milford High School starting in the 2012-2013 season.  It was the 2nd time that both schools have applied to membership in recent history. The last time both applied for membership was a few years ago when the league was considering adding a 10th team. With the success of the addition of Attleboro High School in 2010, it was only a matter of time before the league expanded again.

With the addition of two new teams, the league will now operate as 2 divisions of 6 teams each. If enrollment numbers remain where they are, Taunton will join the large school division known as the Kelly-Rex division while Milford will join the small school division known as the Davenport Division.

The move has been one that Milford has been looking to make for a while. Competing in the Midland Wachusett League, Milford has been stuck in the Central Massachusetts region. The move to an Eastern Massachusetts league is expected to cut down on transportation costs for Milford and get more exposure for their teams.

With Taunton now in the Hockomock League, it delivers another blow to the crumbling Old Colony League. Still hurting from Attleboro’s withdrawal in 2010, the departure of Taunton brings league membership down to 3 schools and gives the league an uncertain future.

The expansion should also help with any scheduling problems schools might have had to deal with last season. With 1-3 more guaranteed matchups, there will be more emphasis on league play and less need to schedule out of league matchups during the season.

This won’t be the only major change to the league. Starting this fall, Hockomock League football will now have both divisional winners advance to the postseason. The winner of the Kelly-Rex Division will remain in Division 2 while the winner of the Davenport Division will now play in the Division 3 playoffs.

When reached for comment Foxboro Athletic Director Craig Najarian deferred to Hockomock League President and Mansfield Athletic Director Joseph Russo as was decided at a recent league meeting. Russo did not return an email and phone call asking for comment.
