Hornets Swimmers Top Warriors

The Warriors fell to the Hornets 71-51 in the boys' meet while the girls lost to Mansfield 94-71.

With only seven of the 10 members of the Foxborough boys' swim team available for a Sunday afternoon meet against Mansfield, things were not going to be easy for the Warriors against their rival Mansfield.

“With only seven kids it's a little challenging to compete,” Foxborough head coach Kiley Macie said.

The Warriors fell to the Hornets, 71-51, in the boys’ meet while the girls lost to Mansfield, 94-71.

Jake Harrington continued to make strides for the Warriors as one of the team’s bright spots. Harrington got a pair of third place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:20.25) and in the 100 freestyle (1:02.62).

“He’s (Jake) definitely gotten faster every meet for us this year,” Macie said.

Tim Smith continues to work hard for a potential sectional qualifier with improved times in the 100 butterfly (2:05.06) and 100 backstroke (1:07.81). Smith is roughly five seconds away in both events from qualifying for the sectional meet.

Clinching the win after six events scored, the Hornets had no shortage of first place finishes and points. Matt Nugent earned two wins in the 200 freestyle (2:01.78) and in the 100 butterfly (1:02.75).

Austin McGowan also earned big points for the Hornets with wins in the 200 individual medley (2:14.53) and in the 100 backstroke 1:04.78.

In the girls meet, Meghan Foley continued to be a consistent performer for the Warriors with a win in the 100 butterfly (1:06.78) and the 500 freestyle (5:55.59).

“She (Foley) is always a super reliable swimmer,” said Macie.

After missing the standard for the 200 freestyle relay for the sectional meet by a second in their previous meet, the team of Maddie Fletcher, Hannah Fishman, Foley, and Lindsay Julio improved their time by two second to beat the standard by over a second (1:54.06).

Fletcher also earned a second place finish in the 50 freestyle (27.63).

The Hornet girls continued to swim exceptionally well with just under three weeks until the postseason begins.

"They’re swimming very well for the middle of the season,” Mansfield head coach Danielle Matook said. "They’re doing best times for the season so that’s exactly what I was looking for.”

Maeve McGowan continued to hit reliable times with two wins in the 200 freestyle (2:15.64) and 50 freestyle (26.50).

“That was the first time she (Maeve) swam the 200 this season so she did very well and she’s right on her time for the 50,” Matook said.

Rose Aldo swam a pair of qualifying times en route to victory in the 100 freestyle (57.10) and the 100 breaststroke (1:16.03). The freestyle time sends Aldo to the state meet while her breaststroke time sends her to the sectional meet.

The Warriors boys are now 0-6 and the girls are 2-4. The Mansfield boys 5-3, but are 5-1 in league meets. The Mansfield girls are 7-1 and 6-0 in league meets.

The Warriors will be off until Jan. 20 when they face one of the top programs in the state in King Philip while the Hornets will swim against Franklin on Jan. 17.
