Howard and Holmes Win Titles at Hockomock Indoor Track Meet

When it comes to league track meets its takes a substantial amount of depth to win a championship. With depth that no one in the Hockomock League can match, the Mansfield boys are not like any other team. 

“I think we could get in the 80s so for them to rack up 99 points just one point away from triple digits is just amazing,” Mansfield head coach Julie Collins said.

Winning their 11th Hockomock League meet in a row, the Mansfield boys beat second place North Attleboro by 48 points while Oliver Ames captured the girls title.

The Hornets two wins came in the 55 hurdles and the 1,000 run. Josh Lampron led the Hornets in the 1,000 (2:31.62) in a 24 point effort that saw Mansfield take first, third, and fourth in the event. Brian Ferreira continued to perform well with a victory in the 55 hurdles (8.13)

“He’s a big scorer for us all year long,” Collins said. “We’re really looking forward to outdoors in the 110 hurdles. He builds speed and momentum as he goes along.”

In the girls’ meet three new records were set in the sprints and jumps. Jen Esposito of Mansfield won the 55 hurdles and broke the meet record with a time of 8.16. The time breaks the previous record of 8.44 by Meghan Ferreira of Mansfield in 2008. Attleboro’s Brianna Robitallie tied the meet record for the 55 dash with a time of 7.33 in the finals en route to the league title. Canton’s Victoria Tondre beat the long jump record by 4.5 inches with a jump of 17-01.00 feet.

Despite winning only one event, the Oliver Ames girls won the girls title with several second and third place finishes to rack up 68 points to second place Franklin’s 54.

In addition to Grotz’s performance in the 1000 run, Emily Newman picked up a fourth place finish for the Tigers to give them an important extra fourth point and Kayla McKinsey ran for second place in the 300 (42.47). The Tigers came up big in the high jump with Michaela Nichols and Olivia Mileika going 1-2 in the event. Both jumped 5-2 but Nichols was awared first place based on the tie breaker of least misses.

Foxboro was able to get two first place performances both from first year Warriors. Maryland transfer Kiivone Howard won the 300 dash (35.32) while freshman Liz Holmes was victorious in the 1,000 run (3:04.12) beating Oliver Ames' Emily Grotz (3:06.39).

The Warriors also received a pair of runner-up honors in both the boys’ and girls’ mile run from Brendan Sullivan (4:30.14) and Haley Skyes (5:22.78). Kristina Ketchum (11:38.94) earned second place in the two-mile run just behind Alexandria Giese (11:35.38) of Franklin.

King Philip’s Chris Alan beat out Michael Curley of North Attleboro to win the boys' two mile run crossing the finish line at 9:40.46. The win continues what has been a successful year for the KP senior. In the girls' one mile run Stacy Wojcik came in first place with a time of 5:20.55. KP’s third and fourth individual titles came from Matt Bowers who came out on top in the 55 dash (6.73) and long jump (20-04.25). The jump was good enough to beat the meet record by .25 inches.

Next up for the teams of the Hockomock League will be the Divisional State Championship Meet set to take place between February 16th and 19th at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
