Foxborough Volleyball Spoils Senior Night for Lancers

Despite keeping the score close, the Lancers can't overcome the Warriors.

After two sets, it looked liked that the Lancers were finally going to overtake the Foxborough Warriors. There were signs of life through the first two sets and the Lancers even took the lead during the third set. Unfortunately, the Lancers came up just a bit short and could not avoid a 3-0 sweep to the Warriors.

Foxborough came out strong in the opening set with an 11-3 run. The Lancers rallied back late in the set to get to within 2 at 22-20, but Foxborough quickly closed the set to win 25-20.

It was more of the same in the second set. A couple of key blocks by Foxborough’s Ally Perry kept the Lancers at bay. Once again the Lancers got to within 4 at 16-12 after an ace by Abby Anderson. That would be as close as the Lancers would get as Foxborough pulled away with a 25-18 win in the second set.

A drama filled third set almost led to a fourth set. With neither team getting more than a 2-point advantage, both teams pushed each other defensively.

“Just great defense by both teams in the third,” said Foxborough coach Dan Damish.

The Lancers took their first lead of the match at 5-4 and exchanged it for the entire mach. Tied at 23, it looked like anyone’s game but Foxborough scored two quick points in a row to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

“Give Norton credit. They played well. They played some good defense and I’ll give my kids credit too. After falling behind they came back,” said Damish.

It was a tough loss for a Lancers team that was a few errors away from extending the game.

“Its just a few extra mistakes on our side. Communication errors really killed us. Other then that they played really good on the net and some good defense,” said Norton coach Diane Marzelli.

For the Warriors, it was another step in the right direction for a work in progress. With no seniors on the team, the Warriors are still developing their core group of underclassmen.

“We’re a young team. Most of those kids are juniors and one is a sophomore so they’re still learning on the job so I was very happy. They’ve all improved 100 percent,” said Damish

Ashley Snyder led the way for the Warriors with 7 kills and an assist. Ally Perry had 8 kills and 2 blocks. Hannah Whitney had 2 aces.

Abby Anderson had 2 aces for the Lancers. Olivia Karcis had a block. Brianna Arcaro had 2 kills.

The Warriors now improve to 7-9 while the Lancers are now 3-9.

Foxborough travels to Oliver Ames next on Oct. 25 and the Lancers will travel to Westwood on the 26th.
