Foxborough Struggles With Turnovers in Loss At Attleboro

The Warriors turned the ball over four times leading to 21 Bombardier points in a 27-0 loss on the road at Tozier-Cassidy Field.

Last year’s meeting was a classic that came down to the very last play. This year, at a rain-soaked Tozier-Cassidy Field, the Attleboro High Bombardiers (2-1) took care of business much quicker in a 27-0 victory over the Foxboro High Warriors. Attleboro’s defense forced four Warrior turnovers and the offense turned them into 21 points while Foxboro missed two golden opportunities to put points on the board in the first half and never got things going after the break.

With the rain pouring down, conditions were ripe for turnovers and it was the Bombardiers that took full advantage. After senior Tyler Lindsey fumbled a punt in the 1st quarter Foxboro had the ball inside the Attleboro 10 only for senior quarterback Nick Sestito to lose it. Attleboro's offense then drove 95 yards to put themselves ahead with a 1 yard JJ Jolaoso touchdown dive. The Bombardiers also picked off Sestito twice in the half. The first was by Cleveland White and the second by transfer student Zach Schweiger, both of whom were playing their first games of the season. Attleboro scored after both interceptions.

Head Coach Kevin Deschenes was proud of the way his defense stepped up and created scoring opportunities.“We played very well, we played disciplined. We were able to shut down their backs and we took advantage of the turnovers.” He continued, “Our kids did a nice job of controlling the ball and not fumbling the ball and our kids hit hard. To make points off turnovers is big especially in these conditions.”

Foxboro (1-2) had the ball inside the Attleboro ten yard line just before the half after a 64 yard completion from Sestito to fellow senior Kiivone Howard. However a rare, rain-induced drop from wide receiver Greg Stamatov on the goal line and a solid Attleboro defensive stand on fourth down kept the Warriors off the board. The Foxboro offense struggled in the sloppy conditions all night with a number of snaps sailing over the head of Sestito and trouble handling the ball on special teams.

Head coach Jack Martinelli, now in his 30th season at the helm, would not use the conditions as an excuse, “Both teams had to play in it, it didn’t just rain on our side of the field.” He also noted the early chances his team had but failed to put up points, “They wanted it more than we did. Simple as that. When you don’t cash in down early and put seven points on the board…you can’t beat a team.”

This was also a successful debut for Attleboro seniors Jolaoso (two touchdowns) and Schweiger (interception and touchdown) who both sat out the first two games and now give the Bombardiers strength and depth on both sides of the ball. Coach Deschenes was grateful to have the two players back in the line-up but also gave credit to the performance of the offensive line and senior quarterback Chris Walsh, “We were able to get some good cut blocks on the edge and we were able to get some runs but the other thing is that we were somewhat balanced because we were able to throw the ball and that was big. It loosened them up a little bit and kept them from just piling in the box.”

Attleboro continues the non-league portion of their schedule next week with a trip to future Hockomock League opponent the Taunton Tigers while Foxboro travels to take on a fellow Davenport Division team, the Canton Bulldogs.
