Foxborough Softball Loses in Extra Innings to Sharon

Foxborough Warriors lose 3-2 against Sharon on Thursday.

The Foxborough softball team fell short in extra innings against the on Thursday.

Kristine McKee's eighth-inning, one-out single off starter Ari Zonecki scored Allie Rubinowitz from third, sending the host Eagles past Foxborough, 3-2, on Thursday.

Under the rules, in extra innings, each team starts its at-bat with a runner on second. That runner is the player who made the team's last out during the previous inning.

Thursday, for Sharon, that was Rubinowitz. Allie Friedman's lead-off bunt moved Rubinowitz to third. McKee then singled to left, scoring the game-winning run.

"We executed every time we needed to execute. We played great defense, and we were just able to pull it off when we needed to," Sharon head coach Deb Parker said.

Foxborough (1-3) had tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh.

Julia Robichaud's leadoff single to center, Eva Mazzoni's walk and Jess Septelka's infield hit loaded the bases with no outs against Sharon starter Brittany Whiting.

The right-handed senior co-captain then struck out Vicki Solomon and caught Erin Pearson's pop up. Joanna Magnusson's infield hit to short scored Robichaud with the tying run and kept the bases loaded. Whiting struck out Chelsea Laracy to end the rally.

"(Foxborough) played extremely well defensively. They just had to capitalize a little bit more, and it would've been a different game," Foxborough head coach Lauren Cucinatta said.

The Warriors led 1-0 after scoring in the top of the second.

Brenna Connolly led off with a double to left and took third when Robichaud's fly ball went off Sharon leftfielder Jenna Kubiak's glove. With Mazzoni at bat, Robichaud stole second. Connolly scored on Mazzoni's grounder to short. Whiting struck out Septelka and Solomon to end the rally.

The run came after Sharon loaded the bases against Zonecki in the bottom of the first. The Warriors righty got Whiting to ground out to shortstop Robichaud, who recorded the out unassisted.

Sharon tied the score at 1-1 in the third, on Elaina Cho's steal of home.

Cho -- who stole four bases -- had led off by grounding a single to left. She stole second, and took third when Robichaud couldn't handle Zonecki's pick-off throw. Cho then stole home.

Sharon took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Friedman led off with a fly ball triple to left. She scored on Becky Marder's two-out single to center.

Foxborough hosts Walpole on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Sharon travels to Wellesley on Friday for a 4 p.m. game, a make-up of the April 5 rain out.
