Foxborough Softball Falls to Walpole, 5-2

Foxborough only scored two runs, one in the fifth and one in the seventh, which resulted in a 5-2 win for the Rebels.

Walpole High School tallied three runs in the second inning and two in the fifth, while Foxborough High School only scored two runs, one in the fifth and one in the seventh, which resulted in a 5-2 win for the Rebels.

“I was pleased [with the production],” said Walpole head coach Jim Dufy.

“The top of the line up bunted the ball around. Couple doubles out of Sam [McChesney] and Kelsey [Cosby] today, couple RBI’s [and] I think the two tag ups in that fifth inning gave us a cushion when we went up, 5-0.”

The first inning was extremely quiet, but Walpole’s middle part of the lineup sparked their lackluster offense during the top of the second, as the Rebels scored three runs. Jess Cochrane connect on a Julia Robichaund pitch that resulted in a double and eventually, Cochrane, Tori Richardson and Jenelle Caskie scored, as well as gave the Rebels an early, 3-0 lead.

Although, Robichaund and her Warrior teammates regained their composure on the diamond during the third and fourth innings before watching Walpole yet again tack on an additional two runs during the top of the fifth. Bridget Nicholson and Katie Causca hit back-to-back sacrifice fly balls to score Jill Songin and Kelsey Cosby.

Yet, during that same inning, Foxborough broke out of their slump and scored their first run of the game during that same inning when Robichaund hit a RBI double, which drove in Chelsea Laracry to make it, 5-1.

The game then remained subtle until Foxborough’s final at bat during the bottom half of the seventh inning when Shannon Sues scored. The Warriors then placed a few runners in scoring position, which didn’t baffle Walpole, who watched McChesney snag the game winning pop fly to secure the Rebels fourth win of the season.

“These kids are all young, but games like this put the pressure on and it’s going to be good hopefully come tournament time,” said Walpole head coach Jim Dufy.

“That Foxborough team is really outstanding team.”

Besides just scoring two runs, the Warriors finished the game with 13-hits compared to the Rebels five. Although, Foxborough also struggled at the plate, as they combined for three strikeouts, as well as left eight runners on the base path.

“I’m really trying to get mechanics down with them and they’re doing it and the rest will come in time. It’s a learning experience for them, but it has been a slight struggle [of our team all season],” said Foxborough head coach Lauren Cucinotta.

“This team could do anything they want anytime they put their mind to it, I know they can, as long as they’re all there. It didn’t happen today, but will happen in the future.”
