Foxborough's Holmes Wins Hockomock Mile Title

Foxborough freshman Liz Holmes won the mile at Thursday's Hockomock League Championships at Oliver Ames in North Easton.

 

For the 10th year in the row, the Mansfield High Hornets took home the boys’ Hockomock League Track and Field Championships. Finishing with an impressive 155.5 points, the defending state champions took first place in 10 of 17 events in a dominating performance at Thursday afternoon and evening.

Kiivone Howard had Foxborough's best finish on the boys' side with a second place in the 400 meters at 50:46, while Brendan Sullivan was sixth in the two-mile in 9:58.61.

In the girls’ meet, a strong showing in the field events helped the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers take home the league title.

Foxborough's sensational freshman Liz Holmes won the mile in 5:09.47, while sophomore Haley Spikes was third in 5:22.68.  The 4 x 800 relay team was also first for the Warriors in 9:0.84. Freshman Katherine Tamulionos was second in the 400 meter hurdles. Brooke Martyiak was third in the triple jump at 35-8, while Andrea Marcotte was fourth in the 200 meters at 26.60. The 4 x 100 relay was fifth and Kelsey Morris was sixth in the javelin at 101-11.

“Every year, it's different because the kids are different," said Mansfield High boys' head coach Julie Collins of her team's 10th title. "The team dynamics are different so its fun every year.”

Coming out on top in one of the more competitive years for the distance events was Josh Lampron who scored a pair of wins in the mile (4:23.98) and 800 (1:53.89) for the Hornets.

In the sprints, Brian Ferreira took home the title in the 110 hurdlers (14.98) while Griffin Robertson won the 200 (22.86). Greg Donahue and Kevin Makie added to the Hornets’ point total with a third and fourth place finish in the 100. In the 400, Matt Baldasare beat Foxborough’s Kiivone Howard in the final straight away to win another event for Mansfield, crossing the finish line at 49.48.

A new school record was set in the javelin where Dan Ivas won the event with a throw of 170-03.

“The kid keeps improving week to week,” Collins said of Ivas “Just outstanding league title for him. Just one of our most improved athletes on our team. It’s been a thrill to watch his progress the last 12 months.”

In the two mile, King Philip’s Chris Allen broke the meet record time with a run of 9:15.23. Taking a fast pace from start to finish, it was clear early on that no one was going to stay with Allen beyond the early part of the race. Allen’s record-breaking day continued with the 4x800 where the Warriors won and set a new meet record of 8:12.42

KP’s third win of the day came from Matt Bowers who took the 100 with a time of 11.44.

In the boys’ triple jump, Sharon’s Connor Hichens took home the only win for the Eagles win a jump of 42-10.

In the girls’ meet, a strong showing in the field events helped the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers take home the league title.

With the scores near identical between Mansfield and North Attleboro towards the end of the meet, Sydney Bennett’s long jump of 17-03.75 combined with a win in the 4x800 locked up the victory for the Big Red. It was a busy day for Bennett who was able to win the shot put with a throw of 40-00 and take home the 100 hurdles (15.11) title.

In the discus, the Red Rocketeers took the top three spots as Natasha Gavilanez won the event (117-01) while Kate Kummer (91-05) and Laura Malone (89-03) took second and third.

Mansfield’s Jen Esposito set a meet record in the 400 hurdles, winning the race in 1:01.96. She also took first place in the 200 (25.97).

Triple jumper Candace Steadman set the school record in the process of winning with a mark of 36-04.5. With a flair for the dramatics, Steadman fouled on her first two attempts before jumping over 35-10 to get into the finals.

In the finals, Steadman struggled before getting the winning jump on her third and last attempt.

In the javelin, Michaela Lievi won with a throw of 116-02. Laura Daley placed second for the Tigers in the shot put (35-10) behind Bennett.

In the boys’ triple jump, Sharon’s Connor Hichens took home the only win for the Eagles win a jump of 42-10.

Stoughton’s Jade Paul held off a surging Nichole Sarkis of North Attleboro in the 800 with a time of 2:19.13 to Sarkis’ 2:21.96.

Attleboro’s Briana Robitaille asserted herself as one of the best sprinters in the state by winning the 100 by almost a second with a time of 12.17. Melissa Beaupre of North Attleboro was second with a time of 13.09.

High jumper Kevin Cutler cleared 6-2 in a winning performance for the Blue Bombardiers.

Next weekend the teams of the Hockomock League compete at the State Divisional Meets.
