Foxborough Legion Baseball Downs Norfolk

It may not have been the prettiest of games, but Foxborough Post 93 pulled it out against Norfolk Post 335. Holding off a late rally by Norfolk, Foxborough was able to escape with a 3-2 win and keep their dim playoff hopes alive.

Showing some of the power hitting that has been rare this year, Garrett Briggs got Post 93 on the board with a solo home run to left field in the top of the second inning. Later in the inning, A throwing error on a Brandon Fowler hit gave Foxborough another run as Andrew Bukuras scored to increase the lead to two.

"We haven’t had power the last few years so it’s nice to get that jump start,” Foxborough head coach Bill Travers said about the home run. “He’s been swinging the bat a lot better.”

Later in the top of the sixth, Post 93 was able to take advantage of a passed ball when Briggs advanced from third base to make it a 3-0 game.

Refusing the quit, Post 335 fought their way back into the game with a two run sixth inning to cut the lead to one. Tyler Campo was able to bat in Matthew Ferreira for the first run while a sacrifice fly by Christian Cooke allowed Campo to score.

With the game on the line, Connor Schramm took his chances trying to get home from second base but a near perfect throw from right field from Aiden Farrell to catcher Drew Briggs meant the second out for Norfolk instead of a tied game.

“That’s a big league play. That’s worth just watching. He’s (Farrell) got a great arm and the catcher made a great play,” Travers said.

With a strike out by Corey Chan to end the game, Post 93 improved to 3-11-1 on the year while Norfolk falls to 1-15.

Aiden Blake threw a complete game for Foxborough, striking out three and not walking a batter.

In the losing effort, Mike Capobianco struck out four and walked three.

While not getting the result they wanted, Norfolk did everything they could to get back into the game. While it could of been over going into the bottom of the six, credit Norfolk for making it a game again.

“The resilience our guys showed is something that we’ve been asking for and begging for and pleading for and we got it tonight.” Norfolk coach Bill Lagos said.

Foxborough travels to Canton on Friday, July 6 while Norfolk is at Walpole on July 10.
