Foxborough Lacrosse Cruises Past Canton, Seniors Honored

The Foxborough Warriors celebrate Senior Day and their win over Canton.

On a very special senior day that saw the honoring of 13 seniors, the Warriors displayed a textbook game of lacrosse. Playing a defensively sound game with a crushing offense, the Warriors cruised to an 11-2 win over the Canton Bulldogs.

In the spirit of senior day, the Foxboro seniors easily took control of the game. Deadlocked at 1 midway though the 1st quarter, Billy Roberts broke the tie with a shot right on net to give the Warriors an early lead.

That early lead would soon grow. James Stather scored from the left off of an assist from Connor Whalen. Tom Theos also scored to make it 4-1 Foxborough at the end of the 1st half.

James Stather starting things off in the 2nd quarter with a goal that saw him juke and jive though the Bulldogs’ defense for his 2nd goal of the game. He would finish the game with game with 3 goals.

Down 5-1, Canton tried to double and triple team the Warriors’ ball carriers but Foxboro simply too much for the Bulldogs to handle. The strategy led to a wide open Brian Donovan getting the ball right in front of the net for a somewhat easy goal.

“They’re just very talented.  They came out, jumped on us. We were able to keep it close very very early 1-2 but then they just exploded. They got too much talent. They were very good,” said Canton coach Bill Bendell

Taking advantage of  a weakening defense, both Whalen and Stather would each get goals to put the Warriors up at the half 9-1 over the Bulldogs.

With most of their starters sitting for the 2nd half, the Warriors maintained the lead and added two goals to their total in the 2nd half. Tom Theos got his 2nd goal of the game and Mike Campbell picked up a goal to cap off an 11-2 win over the Bulldogs.

James Stather led scoring for the Warriors with 3 goals. Tom Theos wasn’t far behind with 2 goals. Jake Hyland, Connor Whalen, Billy Roberts, Jake Soccorso, Mike Campbell, and Brian Donovan all had 1 goal. The emphasis on multiple scorer for the Warriors rather than 1 or 2 high goal scorers is exactly what the team was looking for. With a more spread out scoring attack, Coach Matt Noone feels his team can be more of a threat if everyone is a potential threat to score.

“I’m looking at some of the stats in the paper where these guys have 40 goals and 25 assists and I’m saying how can that possibly be? If you look at our stats we got 9, 10 different scorers every game. That’s good," he said. "That’s an unselfish lacrosse team and I’d rather be 10 guys than 1 guy epically come tournament time.”

During halftime, the 13 seniors on the Warriors lacrosse team were honored for their contribution to the program. Joined by their friends and family, Coach Noone spoke fondly of his departing players. Being the first great group after the foundation of the program was set, this was a group of senior that experienced the program’s first big wins including the team’s first Hockomock League title.

“These guys were around the first time we beat Mansfield, they were around the first time we beat King Philip, they were around the first time we beat Franklin. Since they we’re freshmen, before they came here we didn’t beat any of those schools," said Coach Noone after the game. “Our foundation was set early before they got there but they built the first floor.”

Foxborough will go right back to work tomorrow afternoon against the Bishop Feehan Shamrocks. The game is a makeup game for a postponed game from earlier in the season. Game time is set for 3:30 at State School Field in Foxborough.
