Foxborough Girls Tennis Head to Finals

Three seeded Foxborough will play Hopkinton in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional Championship on Saturday.

On a hot and blistering day in Medfield, the Foxborough Warriors faced their biggest challenged of the season. Going against an undefeated Medfield team, the Warriors were playing for more than just bragging rights. There was also a chance to play for the South Sectional title on the line. Fighting hot temperatures and aggressive play from Medfield, Foxborough made sure they would be present and accounted for at Saturday’s MIAA Division 2 South Sectional Final with a 3-2 win.

The victory came the same way many had come before today. With all 3 Foxborough singles players undefeated in team play, it was going to be a challenge for any of them to be defeated - even in the hot weather.

“The singles matches were all pretty decisive but even though we were ahead in each set you know you cant take it for granted on a day like today when its really hot,” said Foxborough Coach Peter Prinos. “You just got to win every point and get off the court as quick as you can.”

Looking in control for most of her match, Alana Prinos defeated Alex Freeman 6-1, 6-0 in the first singles contest. The junior captain looked dominant for most of the match and did not give Freeman a chance to get back in the game.

In the second singles match, Hallie Young of Foxboro defeated Lexi Nasaway 6-2, 6-2. While Young dominated most of the match, Nasaway attempted to push the match longer in the final set. Unfortunately, the heat took its toll on Nasaway as the fatigued player simply ran out of gas at the end of the match.

In the final singles match, Emma Prinos of Foxborough defeat Hannah Oliphant 6-1, 6-1. Oliphant at times tried to force Prinos into playing a shorter game and even tried to force wider shots at time. It was not enough as Prinos like Young and Alana Prinos, extended her undefeated streak in team play.

In the doubles contests, it was a clean sweep for Medfield. In the first doubles match, the team of Chelsea Miller and Mary Harris of Foxboro were defeated by the team of Katie Goldense and Hunter Stahl of Medfield 1-6, 2-6. Playing off their strengths, it was expected that Medfield would come in with a strong doubles team.

In the second doubles match, the team of Megan Carter and Caroline Muise fell to Julia Basileire and Megan Tschirch 2-6, 1-6.

With the victory, Foxborough will move on to the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional Finals. While the scorecard shows a typical Foxboro tennis score, the win did not come easy. The Warriors were able to keep their level of play up despite the heat, leaving coach Peter Prinos relieved.

“Happy. Very very happy. Very pleased that we could pull it out,” said Prinos.

With Foxboro’s victory comes the end of the season for Medfield. The team also named the Warriors finishes the season with a record of 22-1.

“It was an awesome season and I was proud of everyone out there today,” said Medfield Coach Chris Dubose.

Next up for the number three seeded Warriors will be the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional Championship match against Hopkinton. The championship match is set for Saturday June 11th in Medway.
