Foxborough Girls Tennis Begin Quest For State Title Saturday

Warriors will get a bye past the preliminary round and straight into a first round matchup against the winner of Sharon vs. Pembroke.

The Foxborough High School girls’ tennis team will begin their postseason play Saturday, June 4 at a time to be announced.

Being awarded the No. 3 seed, the Warriors will get a bye past the preliminary round and straight into a first round matchup against the winner of Sharon vs. Pembroke.

For anyone facing the Warriors its going to be a tough challenge to get past a team that features the best player in the South Sectional and two singles players that have been near perfect all year.

There is no getting around it, anyone is who has to face Alana Prinos is going to have a hard time beating her. The recently crowned South Sectional champion is undefeated in match play all season. Looking unbeatable all year, she’s only been forced to a third set all year and that was in the South Sectional Finals. With an excellent serve and a variety of shots, it’s going to take a lot of work to defeat Prinos.

In the second singles spot is sophomore Hallie Young. The athlete who earned the second spot for the first time this year has been on a year all season. With her only defeat coming in the second round of the individual tournament, Young sports a very balanced game that makes her difficult to defeat. She is also a fast learner when it comes to her mistakes. If she makes a mistake, chances are she is going to learn from that and not repeat it. This is going to be a problem for anyone that already played her in the regular season. Overall her level of play has been a pleasant surprise for the Warriors and she is expected to keep that high quality of play in the tournament.

Emma Prinos holds the third and last singles spot. The younger Prinos like Young has only seen defeat in the individual tournament. She seems to favor the long ball and it's a strategy that has served her well so far this year. She is by far the most emotionally charged player of the singles player so she is going to have to try to not let her emotions get the better of her if the Warriors make a deep run. One of her strengths is that she will not let her opponent back into a game. Once she gets ahead, she makes sure her opponent does not have a chance to get back into the game.

The biggest question mark on this team is both doubles teams. Injured for most of the season, Mary Harris may see a return in postseason play. The sophomore was the top doubles player on the team before a torn ligament in her foot put her on the sidelines. If able to compete, Harris would give a boost to a doubles team that is improving.

Even with the dominance of the three singles players, just one doubles win would put even more pressure on their opponents. Both the teams of Gretta Shaaf/Chelsea Miller and Megan Carter/Caroline Muise have showed potential and now is the time for them to break through.

Taking all of this into consideration, the Warriors are going to be a very dangerous team. A first round matchup works out favorable for the Warriors.

Having beat Sharon twice, the Warriors are confident that they can beat the Eagles. A matchup with Pembroke also works. Both teams simply do not have the players needed to win three matches against the Warriors.

The real challenge will come later in the tournament when the Warriors have to face more balanced teams. More balanced teams may be a challenge but the Warriors will have to get past Sharon or Pembroke first before they worry about that.
