Foxborough Girls Soccer Loses Close Game to Sharon

Trailing 2-1 early in the second half, Eagles score twice for 3-2 victory over Foxborough.

Tuesday, the Sharon High School varsity girls soccer team showed visiting Foxborough that poking the Eagles' bear is a bad idea.

Late in the second half, the referees called Sharon junior Samantha Alves off the field for an equipment issue -- forcing the Eagles to play short one player, head coach Jon Lavien said.

Trailing 2-1, the Eagles tied the score at the 26:13 mark on a goal from senior Allie Friedman, assisted by senior captain Rosie Tootell.

Alves then returned, and scored unassisted at the 33:12 mark -- her second goal of the match -- for a 3-2 Sharon victory.

"Obviously, you don't 'poke the bear,' so to speak," Lavien said of Alves.

Alves scored at 4 minutes of the first half for a 1-0 Sharon lead. Junior Aashna Narang earned the assist.

Foxborough tied it three minutes later, on a goal by Danielle Roma.

The score remained 1-1 until the Warriors' Brooke Martyniak scored at the 10:43 mark of the second half.

"I think we played them tough," Foxborough head coach Caitlin Annicelli said.

"It was just a couple of bad bounces here or there. We had our opportunities. So did they."

Lavien said his charges "dug down deep" for the win.

"And the best part about it all is we scored a goal down a man," he said.

Sharon (7-5-2) has two more matches scheduled this week:

Foxborough (2-10) is scheduled to play at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ursuline Academy.
