Foxborough Girls' Lax Bounced from MIAA State Tournament in First Round Loss to Ashland

The Warriors' season came to an abrupt end Tuesday following a 12-11 loss to visiting Ashland in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament.

It was truly a tale of two halves for the Foxborough High School girls' lacrosse team Tuesday as the Warriors struggled to maintain its first-half momentum in a 12-11 loss to visiting Ashland.

Foxborough (17-3-1) opened the game on a 4-0 run and built a 7-2 lead with 1:48 remaining in the first half. But Ashland responded with two goals in the final 1:16 to pull within three heading into halftime.

It also proved to steal the momentum of the game.

Ashland opened the second half with two goals less than 40 seconds apart but Foxborough got one back thanks to Katie Notarangelo and led 8-6 with 20 minutes to go.

From there, however, Ashland took over, netting five straight goals to take an 11-8 lead with 11:24 remaining in regulation as Foxborough struggled to control draws and create offensive chances for the majority of the half.

Foxborough's Rogan Genevieve got Foxborough back in the game with a goal near the 20-minute mark of the second half to pull the Warriors within two (11-9).

Trailing 12-10 with just over one minute remaining in regulation, Foxborough's Marybeth Sweeney turned in a tremendous individual effort that began with her defense and ended with her fourth goal of the game to pull the Warriors within one at 12-11.

Sweeney was able to free the ball from an Ashland defender's cradle, scoop it up and charge in on net for an uncontested shot on goal. Sweeney's shot found the back of the net with 1:16 to go.

But that tremendous effort proved to be too little too late as Ashland effectively ran the clock out on the game and Foxborough's season.

3 Goals Called Back

Foxborough had three goals called back, including two in the second half, which proved costly in a one-goal season-ending defeat Tuesday.

The violations? A goal circle violation with 16 minutes remaining in the second half and a Foxborough charging violation with 2:47 remaining.

Foxborough Scorers

Foxborough was led by Marybeth Sweeney's four goals, including a first half hat trick. Katie Notarangelo netted three, Allie Peter added two and Ellen Decker and Geneieve Rogan each scored one.

History Doesn't Repeat Itself

Foxborough defeated Ashland, 12-8 in a non-league game earlier this season but was not able to get past the Clockers the second time around.
