Foxborough Girls Lacrosse Looks to Promising Future

Foxborough looks ahead to the future after a hard loss to King Philip.

The Foxborough girls lacrosse season came to a disappointing end Monday afternoon. Playing King Philip in their Hockomock Classic crossover game, the Warriors could not capitalize on an early 2-0 lead and lost to King Philip 15-8.

Coming out strong against King Philip, Foxborough looked to jump on KP early. Danielle Warner got an early goal for Foxborough that was followed up by another goal from Abby Tepper.

The early lead would not last for Foxborough. Making great use their speed, Mallory Knowlton and Olivia Fair quickly tied the game up. King Philip continued to pound on Foxboro with 2 big goals from Kathryn Riley to give KP a 4-2 lead. Scoring 4 goals in a span of less than 3 minutes, it was apparent that King Philip had gotten out of their early slump and we’re looking to create some damage.

“We just started playing our game again. We were kind of slow at the beginning.  We had a 3 day break so it was just getting back into momentum,” said King Philip coach Julie Pasquantonio.

Defensively, King Philip began to clamp down around the net. After letting Tepper score a goal by breaking through the defense, KP consistently double and triple teamed Foxboro shooters to shut down Foxboro’s offense. Not allowing any goals for the rest of the half, it only made the goals scored by KP that much more damaging.

“As a person trying to attach the net, that’s hard when there’s a double or triple team. If there is three people on you that means that two people are open and we need to do a better job of looking up and find that open person,” said Foxborough coach  Jessica Cercone.

King Philip continued to rack up the goals in the first and second halves. With a team that was simply faster than Foxborough, KP turned some parts of the game into a track meet and Foxborough was unable to keep up.

“Their(King Philip) is a good team so they just killed us on the fast breaks that was a big thing. They are very quick. They took advantage of that and that was to our disadvantage,” said Cercone.

In the 2nd half, Foxborough attempted to make a come back. Getting goals from Genne Rogan, Danielle Warner, and Ellen Decker, Foxborough cut the lead to 5 with a little over 20 minutes in the game. King Philip would prove to be too strong, getting a decisive 15-8 win.

Danielle Warner led Foxboro in scoring with 3 goals. Ellen Decker netted 2 of her own in the losing effort.  For King Philip Kathryn Riley, Olivia Fair, and Mallory Knowlton all led KP with 3 goals each.

While the season is over for Foxboro, this is still a lot of excitement in the future of this young program. In a season that saw vast improvement across the board, coach Cercone believes this team can become a threat in the near future.

“We’re a young team. We’re losing six seniors. Obviously Danielle and Kristin(The captains) we’ll miss them but we have a lot of talent in the upcoming years and definitely look out for Foxboro because they can do a lot.”
