Foxborough Girls Basketball Team Rolls to Win Over Stoughtion

Warriors have an easy time with Black Knights in rate Saturday afternoon game.

After a 0-6 start, the Stoughton High School girls’ basketball team had won three out of its last four games entering Saturday afternoon’s makeup game at Foxborough.

The Black Knights had lost at home earlier this season to the Warriors by a lopsided 67-39, in a contest that saw Foxborough outscore Stoughton 40-10 in the second half.

Stoughton knew that against the explosive Foxborough team that it would have to play great defense for four full quarters and compliment it with balanced offense. Saturday afternoon the Black Knights did a great job defensively, but couldn’t discover their shooting touch all game and fell to Foxborough, 41-28, in a low scoring affair.

Both teams did a great job defensively, especially against the other team’s top scorer. Foxborough’s Ally Perry led the defensive effort in holding Stoughton junior and top scorer Chrystal Holland to a season low four points. In return, Stoughton did a solid defensive job against Kayleen Whall, holding the Warriors’ top scorer to only ten points.

“Our defense did a good job throughout the game and kept us in there, but we had no outside shooting, making only one shot the whole game,” and you can’t beat a team like Foxborough with no production from the outside,” said Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan.

Stoughton now drops to 3-8 overall and in the Hockomock League and 1-4 in the Davenport (small schools) Division. Foxborough is now 9-5 overall, 6-5 in the league and 4-2 in the Davenport Division, and on its way to the post-season tournament.

Stoughton got off to a fast start, and took an 11-7 lead into the second quarter. The Black Knights had both sophomore center Nicole Daniels (12 points and 13 rebounds) and senior forward Sydnee Jackson (nine points and ten rebounds) dominating down low, carrying the offensive load (21 of the team’s 28 points) for Stoughton.

Foxborough came back and tied the game, 15-15 at halftime, outscoring Stoughton 8-4 in a defensive-minded second quarter.

“We didn’t have a good offensive showing and Stoughton played well defending us, but our consistent defense, shutting down (Chrystal) Holland, and a solid fourth quarter helped us get this win,” said Foxborough coach Sarah Behn.

Stoughton converted only one outside shot, a three-pointer by junior Jackie Kuhn, for the entire game. Foxborough got added help from the duo of Ashley Snyder and Leigha Tracey, who each had nine points.

The third quarter was another low-scoring eight minutes, with Foxborough edging Stoughton, 7-6, to take a 22-21 lead entering the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Foxborough offense awoke, while the Stoughton offense still couldn’t get any shot to drop through the basket. The Warriors outscored Stoughton 19-7 over the final eight minutes to earn a victory that all but assures a post-season berth for the Warriors.

Stoughton will play again Tuesday at Oliver Ames in the second of four straight road games. Foxborough will travel to Sharon, the same night, for its next game against the Eagles.
