Foxborough Football Wins Big in Home Opener

The Foxborough Warriors topped Falmouth for a 35-0 win in the Warriors' home opener.

It was the complete opposite of what happened last week for the Warriors. With little struggle against the Falmouth Clippers, the Warriors topped Falmouth for a 35-0 win in the Warriors’ home opener.

The story of the night might have been the way quarterback Nick Sestito was able to connect with wide receiver Greg Stamatov. The senior wide receiver kick started the Warriors’ offense late in the first quarter with a screen pass that went for 49 yards and put the Warriors at the Falmouth 25 yard line.

A few plays later, Sestito put the Warriors on the board for the first of his three touchdowns throws. Finding Zack Whitehouse in the end zone, put the Warriors up 7-0 early in the second quarter.

The Sestito-Stamatov connection continued to give the Clippers trouble during the second quarter. Twice they were able to connect for touchdowns.  After an initial rushing touchdown from Kiivone Howard was called back due to holding on the Warriors, Sestito was able to find Stamatov for a 25-yard touchdown pass.

Their second touchdown would come in the closing seconds of the second quarter. Sestito was once again able to find Stamatov in the end zone to put the Warriors up 21-0 with 22 seconds left in the half.

On defense the Warriors were dominant. Stopping a Clippers team that relied heavily on the run, the Clippers found themselves stuffed by the Warriors defense for most of the night with no answer.

“Team defense, we played very good. It's a vast improvement,” said Warriors head coach Jack Martinelli.

The second half was no less kind to the Clippers. Howard would avenge his taken away touchdown with a 9-yard run to put the Warriors up 28-0 midway though the third period. It was a solid day for the transfer student from Maryland. Howard would end the day with 35 yards rushing and averaging 11.67 yards per a carry. Howard also caught a 37-yard pass to extend the drive that led to the Warriors’ third touchdown.

“He’s a special weapon,” said Martinelli of Howard.

A final touchdown came off a drive led by backup quarterback Mike Slaby. Getting down to the 7-yard line on fourth and goal, Slaby found the end zone on a QB keeper to extend the lead to 35-0.

It was a big night for practically everyone that stepped on the field for the Warriors. Nick Sestito threw for 204 yards with 3 touchdowns though the air. Greg Stamatov caught for 155 yards with 2 catches for touchdowns. In addition to Howard’s contributions on the ground, Jeff McPherson rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries.

With the win, the Warriors are now 1-1 overall and 0-0 in league games.

Next up for the Warriors will be a matchup with Attleboro High School. The Blue Bombardiers find themselves at 1-1 after losing a close one to Dartmouth. Game time is set for 7pm on Sept. 23 at Attleboro.

Falmouth will play Dartmouth Sept. 23 in their next face-off.
