Foxborough Boys Soccer Wins in the Rain

Foxboro defeats King Philip 1-0.

As the rain fell from the skies, King Philip and Foxborough battled it out on the wet grass in Wrentham in a Hockomock League boys soccer game.

After a scoreless first half, the visiting Warriors were able to beat KP keeper Jim Murphy in the early moments of the second half and held on for the 1-0 victory.

At the 39th minute of the second half with the rain still falling, Foxboro’s Adian Hyland took a long shot from the right hand side that sailed into the upper left hand corner of the net for the only score of the contest. After putting the ball behind Murphy so early in the second half, Foxboro had to rely on its defense to preserve the win.

“I tip my hat to them; they had a good hit early on and protected that goal,” KP Coach Kip Lewis. “It was one of those game that you battle and battle, play really well but it doesn’t go your way.”

Although the final score was in favor of the visitors, it was the home team that gave its fans more to cheer about. Unfortunately, their opportunities were thwarted each and every time they ventured into the Foxborough zone.

“We’ve got some very young guys in the back who have been trying to figure their identities out,” Foxboro Coach Patrick Nash said. “Today they played their butts off and did some excellent one-on-one defending. “

Lewis agrees that Foxboro played a great game, but also noted that his team didn’t put a lot of pressure on the visitors.

“We actually didn’t have too many dangerous opportunities," the Warrior coach said. “We did get the ball into the final third, but didn’t make much of it. We really didn’t make their goalie [Nick Adair] work too much.”

As the clock began to tick below the five minute mark, King Philip tried to get that elusive tying goal, but to no avail. Each time that thought that had an opportunity, Foxborough was right there to push the ball back out.

“We got a little tired near the end of the game and KP — you’ve got to give them credit — continued to work hard,” Nash said. “We worked hard too, and got lucky in the end to come away with the win.”

The win improves Foxboro to 3-3, while KP goes to 2-2-3 and will host Attleboro (Monday), Hopkinton (Wednesday) and Bishop Feehan (Friday) next week. Foxboro, after beating both Franklin and KP, will host Oliver Ames on Monday and travel to Mansfield on Wednesday.
