Foxboro Legion Bounces Back With 5-1 Win Over Westwood

Foxboro picked up a solid win against Westwood 5-1.

Something looked different about Foxboro Post 93 against Westwood Post 320. Trying to bounce back from a bad loss against Norwood, Foxboro looked determined to come out of the game with a win.

“That team had a little giddy-up in their step today,” said Foxboro coach Bill Travers.

Getting great hits and backed by a solid pitching performance by Tom Savageau, Foxboro picked up a solid win against Westwood 5-1.

It was the type of game that was over early on.  With two on and a 3-2 count, Nick Carafa singled to score Steve Nagle and give Foxboro a 1-0 lead.

Steve Fizmaurice continued the rally with a single to drive in Tom Brady and make it a 2-0 game for Foxboro. Fitzmaurice himself would make it home after a passed ball gave him a chance to steal home and extend the lead to three.

With three quick runs in the bottom of the first, Foxboro intended on putting Westwood behind quickly and out of the game.

“They kinda took us out of the game early. They took the game away from us,” said Westwood coach Dick Paster.

In the bottom of the third, Aiden Farell delivered some excitement at the plate. Smashing the ball to left field, Farell had to settle for a double after hitting the ball just short of a home run.

“As soon as he hit it I said that’s gone! But he has top spin with his top hand when he swing so the ball has rotation when the ball goes down but that’s good, that’s a big hit,” said Travers.

Farell found his way home quickly as Fitzmaurice picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly out to allow Farell to score and make it a 4-0 game.

Farrell got home one more time during a game after a Vinny Monahan out at first base gave him time to score in the bottom of the fifth.

Westwood finally got on the board in the top of the seventh. With no outs and two on, Mike Uradni was able to bat in Mike Jablonsk to make it a 5-1 game.

It was a solid day on the mound for Foxboro pitcher Tom Savageau. Throwing a compete game, Savageau struck out 8, walked 3, and only gave up 3 hits.

“Savageau threw very well. Starting to find his rhythm. Had a good fastball, really good curveball so I was very happy to see that,” said Travers.

At the plate, Aiden Farrell went 1-2 with 2 runs. Steve Fitzmaurice went 2-2 with a run and a RBI. Mitch Goldenberg also went 1-2.

For Westwood, John Mullen and Mike Uradnik both went 1-3.  Mike LaVita went 1-2.

With the win, Foxboro improves to 3-2 and Westwood is now 2-2. Both teams will have a long stretch of games coming up in the following week. Westwood will host Medfield at 5:45 on Monday June 20th. The game is the fifth game in a stretch that will see Westwood play 9 days in a row. Foxboro will play host to Walpole at 5:45 on Monday June 20th. The game will be the second game in a stretch that will see Foxboro play five games in six days. While playing a lot of baseball in a short period of time, its nothing that Foxboro coach Bill Travers thinks his team can’t handle.

“Nobody should be tired, their kids. Their only 18 years old. How tired can you get?" he said.
