Foxboro High Volleyball Falls to Stoughton in Season Opener

The visiting Warriors won the first set, but dropped the next three, losing to the Black Knights Friday evening

After a promising start to Friday's season-opening match at Stoughton, the Foxboro High girls' varsity volleyball team fell to the Black Knights in four sets.

The Warriors won the first set 25-19, but Stoughton came back to win the final three: 25-12, 25-19 and 25-12, respectively.

"Give Stoughton credit, they outplayed us the last three sets," Foxboro coach Dan Damish said.

The Warriors lost nine seniors from last year's squad, so Damish said there will be some "learning on the job" this season, with many playing new positions.

"The first set was outstanding," Damish said. "In the second, third and fourth [sets] we were thinking rather than reacting."

Stoughton coach Ken Gay said his team "unfortunately tends to be a slow starting team."

"But once we get going, we keep going," he said.

And that's exactly what the Black Knights did, building large leads in the second, third and fourth sets.

With the match tied one set a piece, Stoughton built a 13-6 lead to start the third, but Foxboro responded by scoring six of the next eight points to cut the deficit to only three, 15-12.

But that was as close as Foxboro could get, with Stoughton scoring the next four points and eventually taking the set.

The Black Knights cruised in what turned out to be the fourth and decisive set.

Damish said Ashley Snyder played well, as did Ally Perry.

Even in the loss, Damish felt his team played "good team volleyball," but would like to see "more consistency" from set to set.

Foxboro (0-1) plays at Canton on Tuesday.

"We're looking to improve everyday," Damish said.
