Foxborough Girls Soccer Beat KP With Late Goal

The Foxborough Warriors girls’ soccer team has been on a roll as of late. After struggling to get wins, the team finds themselves with three wins in their last four games. A team that once found themselves behind early and quickly, now shows confidence and strength on the field.

“We finally have our seniors healthy and we moved some people around to the composition and we’re playing with a little bit more confidence,” said Warriors coach Caitlin Annicelli.

The Foxborough Warriors showed evidence of their turnaround against the KP Warriors. Going against a team that previously beat them 3-0, the Warriors got the win back and walked away with a 1-0 victory.

For 78 minutes it looked like that both teams were going to have to settle for a scoreless draw. On one side was a King Philip team that couldn’t get a shot off and on the other side was a Foxboro team that was making their own opportunities but was coming up a bit short. With Michaela Carnino, Eva Mazzoni, Kiersten Warner, and Tess Parsons at defense for Foxboro, King Philip struggled to get shots off and get scoring chances.

“Those four don’t really leave the field. They’ve really stepped up and they worked hard in practice and I think they set the tone for the game,” said Annicelli.

Michelle Fay almost broke the tie on multiple occasions. The first occurred in the 29th minute when Fay was able to get a shot off from around 17 yards out but went wide right.

Fay’s best chance came in the 53rd minute when she beat everyone speeding down the left end of the field. While her shot beat the goalkeeper, it hit the inside of the right post and bounced away from the goal.

Foxborough finally broke the dead lock with less than three minutes to play in the game. Danielle Roma was able to get a dead center shot off right above the keeper to score the first goal of the game in the 78th minute. Shooting directly above the keeper, Roma found just enough space between the goalkeeper and the cross bar to find the back of the net.

“She did a great job. She’s got an incredible shot so we were happy to have her score,” said Annicelli.

Holding off King Philip for the remaining time, Foxborough showed off the defense that prevented KP from getting any good shots on net. Playing a completely different game than in their previous encounter, King Philip was forced to look for answers to why the result was so different.

“There was no energy, no desire, no drive. Just flat,” said King Philip coach Greg Massotti.

With a tournament birth on the line, King Philip needed to win their final three games for a chance to play in the postseason. The loss all but kills KP’s chances of playing in November.

“We’ve played obviously better. Why at this point in the season with a week ago when you should be you’re best. I guess that falls on me,” said Massotti.

The win improves Foxboro’s record to 3-10-0 with 6 points while King Philip is 4-8-3 with 11 points.

King Philip will host Attleboro for their final home game of the season on Oct. 25 at 3:30pm. Foxborough will also have their regular season home finale against Oliver Ames on the 26th at 6pm.
