Foxborough Boys Soccer Get 3-1 Win On Senior Night

Aidan Hyland's two goals gets the Warriors past the Sharon Eagles.

When Foxboro and Sharon are on the soccer pitch together, you can always expect a tough match out of both teams. In one of the rougher games of the season that saw four yellow cards, both teams played an aggressive game of soccer that saw plenty of bumps and physical races to the ball.

“Sharon-Foxboro definitely a rival there. Its always tough nose soccer," said Warriors coach Pat Nash.

Overcoming the physical style of play, the Warriors avenged their loss earlier in the season to the Sharon Eagles with a 3-1 win on Senior Night.

Aidan Hyland was the offensive star of the night for the Warriors. Getting the first goal of the night at the 15th minute, Hyland went top right corner from the arch of the penalty box to make it a 1-0 game.

Five minutes later Dan Adair scored from around the same area into the same spot of the goal to make it a 2-0 game in the 20th minute of play.

Early on it looked as the Eagles had trouble keeping up with the Warriors. With almost no one around them, the Warriors enjoyed plenty of chances and clean looks at the net.

“We don’t mind them(Foxboro) scoring but when the guys go unmarked it bothers you,” said Eagles coach Barry Kaye.

The Eagles attempted to start a comeback of sorts when the Eagles scored in the most unusual of ways. After Sharon goalkeeper Mitch Goldenberg booted the ball downfield, a couple of defenders deflected the ball before it found its way to the foot of Ian Beach for the goal at the 57th minute. Since Goldenberg was the last player to have control of the ball before the shot, he was credited with an assist.

The Eagles hopes of a comeback were dampened when Hyland scored near the goal box off a pass from Sawyer Fleck in the 63rd minute of play.

“He (Aiden) played excellent. He finished the game when he had to,” said Nash.

With 17 minutes left on the clock, the Warriors tried to keep the ball away from the Eagles but every once in a while they got a shot off. With shots that could of easily cut the lead or potentially tied the game, Nick Adair was all over the net tipping balls away and making diving saves to preserve the Warriors’ lead.

“Nick was an absolute all star tonight. He covered that top corner awesome. He played great tonight for us,” said Nash.

The game saving stops by Adair completed a second half that saw two teams play with drive and intensity to earn a critical two points in the race to the postseason tournament.

“It could have been closer but it was a good game. Two good high school teams playing. It was a nice game,” said Kaye.

It was a big win for the Warriors who now find themselves within four points of clinching a tournament birth for the first time since 2004. The win gives them a record of 7-6 with 14 points total. The Eagles are now 4-4-4 with 12 points.

The Eagles are off until Friday Oct. 21 when they travel to Stoughton for a critical matchup against the Black Knights. A loss against Stoughton means the Eagles would have to win their final three games if they want to play tournament soccer.

The Warriors can clinch a tournament birth if they win both remaining games this week. They travel to Norton on Oct. 19 for a 6:30 game followed by Bishop Feehan at home at 3:30 on Oct. 21.
