Former Foxborough Resident Recalls Playing for Town's First Little League Team in 1952

Former resident Lyn Levens represented Foxborough in the 1952 Little League District Playoffs. Sixty-one years later, he's looking for his former teammates to share Little League stories with.

Editor's note: The following was published on The Foxborough Youth Baseball & Softball Association website.

Foxboro Little League, under the leadership of President Dr. John T. Shea and supported by Vin Igo, Robert Roche, Ralph Barton, Harold Clark, Ed Crocker, and Dan McCarthy, was founded in 1952.

Four teams consisting of the Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, and Giants began the now 50-plus years of baseball for the youth of Foxborough.

Opening ceremonies were held on Foxco Field and games were played on the high school, now Igo Elementary ball diamond on South Street.

Volunteer parents and supporters such as Charles Gorman, Ed Water, Bill Rex, Fred Seltsam, Jim Schromm, Gil Ouimet, Walt Leary, Neil Bearce, Don Ahern, Bob Skoog, Joe Curran, Frank Lee, and Ollie Bresse all gave many hours of coaching, field preparation and umpiring to initiate a well organized and memorable beginning of The Foxboro Little League.

I have vivid and very fond memories of playing third base, and my brother, Richard catching for Doug Wade, the star pitcher of our league champion Red Sox and later the All-Star Team.

I would especially enjoy hearing from any of the former players or Foxborough residents who remember those early days.

Lyn (wood) Levens now resides in Hacienda Heights, Calif. and can be reached by e-mail at lyn@levens.com.
