Foxborough High Boys' Lacrosse Victorious at Gillette Stadium

Tyler Ames had two goals and an assist in the Foxborough Warriors' 6-2 win over Sandwich at Gillette Stadium.

The setting may of been a little different but for the Foxborough boys' lacrosse team, a home game is a home game, even if the game is played in Gillette Stadium, Saturday.

Playing down the road from their usual stomping grounds as part of the New England Lacrosse Classic, the Foxborough Warriors one again earned a victory at the home of the Patriots with a 6-2 win over the Sandwich Blue Knights.

"Its been a great experience. Playing here last year was fun. We graduated a ton of seniors last year, so a lot more guys get playing time," Foxborough attacker Tyler Ames said of playing in the stadium.

An early burst of offense in the first quarter gave the Warriors the early advantage over the Blue Knights.

Noah Cronin scored only 1:38 into the game to give Foxborough the initial lead. Ames continued to help build momentum for the Warriors only a few minutes later with a wrap around goal to make it a 2-0 game with 7:31 left in the opening period.

Jess Todd made the best of a pass from behind the net from Mike Campbell to increase the Warriors' lead to three late in the first, but Nick Buttafuaco shot off an assist from Brendan Caldeira was enough to get Sandwich on the board right before the end of the opening quarter.

Another goal by Liam White in the second quarter made it a 3-2 game but the defensive performance of the Warriors kept the damage to a minimum in what was a challenging end to the first half.

"We talk about peaks and valleys all the time with these guys," Foxborough head coach Matt Noone said of the second quarter. "That was a big valley."

As the valley continued into the the third quarter, Warriors' goalie Greg Stamatov earned five of his nine saves in the period to prevent a Sandwich comeback. A goal by Drew McGeary from the left extended the lead to 4-2 about midway through the third quarter.

"He (Stamatov) kept us in the game during that storm and we were able to separate a little bit in the fourth quarter," Noone said.

A couple of more goals by Anthony Fertitta and Ames wrapped up the Warriors' second win in as many years at Gillette Stadium.

With four of the six goals coming from midfielders, the pieces are slowly but surely coming together for a Foxborough team that had some huge holes to fill this year.

"We're finally starting I think starting to figure it out," Noone said.

In addition to his two goals Ames also picked up an assist. Fertitta finished the game with a goal and an assist. Campbell and Jake Soccorso both had an assist.

The Warriors improve to 6-2 while the Blue Knights are now 5-3.

Foxborough returns to the field against the defending league champions Franklin in a rematch of last year's Hockomock Cup game on April 25.
