Campbell Scores Double Hat Trick In Hockey Win

Owen Campbell scores six goals and Greg Stamatov had four assists in the Warriors' 12-3 win over Pope John Paul II High School.

If the saying goes when it rains it pours, then the Foxborough High hockey team caused a flood against Pope John Paul II High School. Scoring at will against the school out of Hyannis, the Warriors clinched their first trip to the postseason since 2008 while destroying Pope John Paul II High School, 12-3.

A slow opening four and a half minutes was quickly forgotten when Owen Campbell scored the first of his six goals of the night at 4:33 of the opening period. Campbell got two more in the first period to go into the first intermission with a hat trick and a comfortable lead.

The first line of Campbell, Greg Stamatov, and Nick Dowling continued to make life miserable for the Lions. Earning a combined seven goals, seven assists, and 14 points total, the Warriors’ top line was on point tonight.

“That line of him (Campbell) and Stama (Stamatov) and Dowl (Dowling) has really been our go-to line. It might not show, but it's one of the best lines, even in the Hock,” Foxborough head coach Jim Genovese said.

Campbell began to work on his second hat trick of the game with a goal only 26 seconds into the second period. Stamatov and Dowling got the assists.

Less than three minutes later, Dowling got his first and only goal of the game when the the Lions' goalie tried to stop the puck by wedging it between the back of his sake in the ice. Dowling was able to poke the puck from under the stake and into the net for the shorthanded score.

As times struggling to keep a fast pace due to the large lead, the Lions were able to sneak some pucks past goalie Adam Aldred who relieved starting goalie Melissa Almedia during the third period. The goals cut the lead from eight to five with 7:10 left to play in the game.

Campbell completed his second hat trick of the night with two goals late in the third period. In addition to his six goals, the sophomore forward added two assists to his game totals.

“He’s a spectacular player,” Genovese said about Campbell. “He knows how to bury the puck that’s for sure.“

Defenseman Aiden Campbell also got a late goal with his brother Owen and Shawn Delaney getting the assists at 11:02 of the final period.

The win improves the Warriors record to 4-9-3 but more importantly improves their record against Division 3 teams to 4-0-1. Based on the Sullivan rule that allows teams to qualify for tournaments with a record above .500 against teams in their division or lower, the Warriors will play postseason hockey for the first time in four years.

“They’re (the team) excited. We gotta go win the rest of our games so we get a higher seed but great feeling,” Genovese said.

The Warriors will play the first of their three remaining three Division 3 games against Minuteman High School of Lexington. Game time is at 8pm on Jan. 11 at the Valley Sports Arena in West Concord.
