Bishop Feehan Football Falls to Attleboro

Attleboro High's football team takes home a decisive win over Bishop Feehan at McGrath Stadium to kickoff the 2011 season.

The Attleboro Elks Trophy is becoming a regular fixture in the trophy case at as the Bombardiers dominated the first half in a 28-6 victory over their crosstown rivals, the Shamrocks, at McGrath Stadium. All the scoring was done in the first two quarters as senior running back Malique Clark cashed in on two touchdown runs and fellow senior Mac Borgellas had a back-breaking kickoff return to put Attleboro ahead to stay.

Clark, who finished the night with 129 yards on 19 carries, is supposed to be the third back on the depth chart behind senior J.J. Jolaoso and transfer Zach Schweiger but he looked like a starter in this game. He combined speed with powerful running and one highlight reel block to give the Shamrock defenders constant problems. His 58 yard sweep off left tackle opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. Clark’s physical play drew praise from head coach Kevin Deschenes, “He’s got things that you can’t teach. Hopefully he’s going to work really well for us as we go on and give us a little more.”

The Shamrocks responded quickly to going behind as they marched down the field on a 12-plays, 63-yard touchdown drive capped by captain James Corbesero’s two-yard dive into the end zone. Running back Matt Allen did the bulk of the work on the drive with five carries for 27 yards and drew a 15-yard face mask call as well. Unfortunately for Feehan there would be no shift in momentum as Borgellas fielded the ensuing kickoff and took it 83 yards sucking the life out of a packed and raucous home crowd.

Attleboro scored on all four of their possessions in the first half. Chris Walsh, making just his first career varsity start after seeing limited action as a back-up last season, found fellow captain Tyler Lindsey for a four yard strike that made it 20-6. Then with just 1:22 left in the half Clark scored easily from two yards out and Walsh hit Brandon Mooney for the two-point conversion.

The second half was a mere formality as the Bombardiers kept the ball on the ground showing the depth they have at running back and the Shamrocks never got the passing game going as senior quarterback Andrew Murphy completed only 10 of his 22 pass attempts and was under almost constant pressure from the Bombardiers especially senior lineman Ray Russas. Coach Curt Smith was not going to blame anyone but himself for the loss, “Bottom line is the buck stops here. I didn’t prepare my team well enough. They controlled the tempo of the game, they played better defense than us, a few quick strikes. It’s tough to overcome. They were the better team tonight.”

On the other side of the field, as his team celebrated with the Elks Trophy, Coach Deschenes was happy with the win but knows there is more tough games ahead, “We have a lot of work to do. I’m pleased with the outcome for the kids…It’s a start.” This is the third win in a row for Attleboro against the Shamrocks and extended their lead in the overall series to 25-23-1.
